|
Transmission leaking
I got a 1982 Grand Prix and the transmission is leaking. ive changed the oil pan gasket and it still leaked so i pulled it off again and to see if the pan is bent or anything and it looks like the bolts were over tightened by the owner before which kinda bent the wholes up a bit on the pan. so i went to the auto wreck and got a new pan and installed it with a new gasket and its still leaking! it is a rubber gasket which had no instructions so a i phoned around and no one knows how tight to put it, one guy said around 10 lbs. so i got it on at 10lbs. is that too loose or too tight?
a friend has told me it may be a diff place its leaking... what are all the places it can be leaking from?

it could be leaking from the tailshaft of the trans, the torque converter or the front pump. Look around the tailshaft seal (where the driveshaft goes into the back of the trans) and see if there is trans fluid coming out. this is a common place for a leak. To check the torque converter, you have to take the bottom half of the bellhousing off. Good luck finding that leak!

i just looked under the car and the rear end is dry, i seen a few drips come from The Front where that plastic sheild i think it is. if i take it off what will i find underneath? What part is the bell housing?

the small plastic shield is an inspection plate that when removed gives you access to the flywheel. Depending on the size of the inspection plate, you may or may not be able to see the leak. The bellhousing is the front part of the transmission that houses the torque converter. It bolts directly to the back of the engine (its widest point) and tapers inward towards the trasmission. (smallest point right infront of the trans. pan) The bottom half of it is usually removable. There should be bolts on the left and right side of it that allow the bottom half to be separated from the top half. If you remove the bottom half, you will be able to see the entire torque converter and maybe the front pump seal. If you dont feel comfortable doing this, dont hesitate to take it to a reputable mechanic. Hope this helps and good luck finding that bitch of a leak. (ive had many trans leaks, they suck

i just got a chance to take a look under the car again and i decided to take a few pics. the whole transsmission is like covered in grease. i still can not find the bell housing. thers the flywheel and then the pan and nothing in between, isnt that where it should be?

thanks a lot for the pics. Those really helped. The bottom of the bellhousing is already removed. the round thing bolted directly to the back of the flywheel is the torque converter. the part that encloses the tourque converted is the bellhousing. was the torque converted always exposed like that? If if was, something from the road may have gotten up in there and damaged something (most likely the front pump seal) causing the leak. That was a lot of grease on there though,lol. it might be easier to locate the leak if you get some simple green and clean all that grease out of there. get everything as dry as you can, then start the car. Shift the trans through the gears a few times, and then look under there and see if you can see where it is leaking from. I'll try to find a good pic of a bellhousing for you too. all i did was pull off that black plastic inspection plate thing. shure is greasy as hell lol

cool...i was mistaken then that black inspection plate was the bottom of the bellhousing. sorry to confuse you. I'd still try cleaning that grease off and running the car idle to see where that leak is. lol, i bet you'll see it right away when that grease is off. good luck!

i took a good look at those pics again, and in the last one you can see some trans fluid stains on the upper right side of the trans behind the torque converter. that it probably a front pump seal leak, and in that case the car's gotta go to a good mechanic to get repaired.
