clutchless upshift?
ok, well went to my dads work today and showed everyone my bike, and then told them how after a few hours of riding in traffic, consinuasly up and downshifting, my dad asked me if i was using the clutch, and i said yes but he told me I only need to when i downshift, on an upshift I just have to let off the gas, I rode around today like this, as I am turning the throttle back to none is when i shift, without the clutch, and it worked perfe t all day, and now I only use it for downshifitng and going to first but wanted to klnow if thats alright. I do trust him cuz hes had older streetbikes, and he raced motocross a couple years on his old 250, and hes ridden alot, and if the bikes back then handled this I figure the new ones do as well.
should I go back to using the clutch, or continue like I was told? or maybe one way when cruising the other at hgih rpm's when racing? Thanks

Let's think about it this way.... you can shift gears in a car without your clutch, but is it really the best idea???

I wouldn't do that, Yamahas have weak shift forks to begin with, it will only cause you trouble.

i dont know if it is the same for bikes... but i know for my civic i shift all day long w/o the clutch. (upshifts) i mean, you cant do it if you are running it hard; but it works for like 'normal' driving - like in my car you can SAFELY shift at 2500-3000 without a clutch... so i would assume it works about the same with a bike. it takes some time to get it right though. you kinda have to shift like fast but not fast... you cant let the RPM fall any.
come to think about it... i drive everyones car without a clutch LOL. i dont know a single car you cant do that with-- assumeing it is a stick lol... i could see someone saying that... 'yeah i never use a clutch to shift in my car' ...(guy 2) "dude, you have an auto."  anyway, i dont see why you can not do that to a bike? ..then again i have like no seat time so i guess i am steping outside my bounds here.

ok, the only reason you have to shift kinda fast when not using a clutch is because you are shifting so damn early. trust me, I got a teg with a 1.8 and intake and exhaust and shifting at even 3k it is a dog, so I know in a 1.6l civic you aint shifting at 2500 on a regular basis, but if you do the rpms fall almost none when shifting. you can shift wiht no clutch at redline, when you do that you have to let them fall, to about where theyd be if you were to clutch and put it in the next gear and let the clutch out, wherever the rpms would jump to, thats where you go to the next gear. I have done it myself many times, I have even downshifted without a clutch alot, all you do is be steady on the gas and it comes out of gear very easily/smoothly then you tap the throttle to again where the rpms would sit in the lower gear and then go into gear and it does it perfectly smooth. and on my bike I did it with the clutch unless I was popping a wheelie and the shift from 1st getting me up to 2nd gera balancing I just did it wihtout the clutch cuz it was one less thing to concentrate on and like blue02r6 said yamis have a weak shift fork, so i was better safe than sorry.

You can get away with it but do you really want to get used to riding a bike with out using the clutch for all shifts? NO. First it is not the best for the transmmission and second what if you make a throttle mistake? Or you shift the gear too soon or too late? You don't want to jerk the bike with clutchless shift. That is a good way to lose traction with the ground on bad roads. Please don't listen to someone tryin to show off what they know. It can get you hurt. Enjoy riding.

oh, I wasnt planning to use a clutchless shift opn a turn, but on straight line acceleration you arent gonna lose traction, and on my bike, right as I was about to shift id rest my foot on the lever and then goive a bit of a push and twitch the throttle RIGHT after and it owuld go right into the next gear and be pulling hard instantly, you cant shift too soon with no clutch. it even works on downshifts, only did it once though after reading the book, on the part where it tells you what to do for brake failure so i just wanted to do it to see if it worked smoothly or not but then went right bakc to clutched downshifts. oh and i dont have the R1 no more, might get an R6 again later on, the R1 was cool and once you were going i loved that power to just FLY but off the line only weighing 150 lbs it is impossible to keep the front wheel down in first and even 2nd was a bit hairy trying to get as much power to the wheel wihtout giving it too much, on a 600 it will still probably pull it right up but not as effortlessly as a 1 liter. but I like the yamahas looks the best.

2,500 rpm shift from 2-3 drops it just over 2k rpm. any gear higher and you have to have more rpm b4 u shift. or else it just falls to low to still ahve any kind of accel.

yeah, ive driven a friends 98 EX alot, he had intake and exhaust, it was pretty quick, nevewr shifted at 250 but i imagine if i did it would be pretty gutless, especially if he had a couple amps, couple subs, cap, etc. not much more wiehgt but wiht hte box for the subs and all it would be enough to notice the weight that low. I cant stand shifting at 3k from 2nd to 3rd, but I have to because of my f'd synchros, sometimes ill just delay the 2nd to 3rd shift a few seconds after the clutch is pushed so that I can get moving a bit faster in 2nd, then 3rd pulls fine.

Are you guys that lazy that you cant pull the clutch in? I have seen gear dogs from an R6 from a guy who doesnt use the clutch after 2nd and they arent pretty. They were very worn. So not only did the guy have a 2nd gear problem but he had a EVERY GEAR problem. While it isnt gonna do much if you do it every now and then, a constant habit of this will cause you some problems that you may not like. And this is even worse on a car. Just get in the habit of using the clutch because it isnt that hard to do and will save you some problems later on.

on ym bike I ended up only doing it if I had to have the FASTEST acceleration possible, and in my integra I do it everytime I drive it, because I cant use my clutch , and the reason for that is I do not have one. lol
I got it in the mail tomday and I will be back to using the cluch soon. I actualy have only gone like maybe 10 mils at most wihtout the clutch in the last week since its been out of service.
