LT1 sound vs LS1 sound
I saw the lt1 vs ls1 post, and i think both are great engines but I want to know, for stock only, which engine gives the best deep, throaty sound? I havent decided which one I want yet, but the one I get has to rumble, im also thinking about series 80 flowmaster mufflers........answer away!

In my opinion, LT1's can have a better sound. But it depends a lot on what exhaust system you get. Many people believe Borla sounds best for all Trans Ams. It really is a personal preference though.

EDIT: TADUDE95 beat me to it!
This is very much a personal preference question here - but I'll go it alone and say that the LT1 did(stock) and will(aftermarket) sound better than the LS1! You just can't get the same kind of rumble out of the new motors - and my LS1 bros. agree. I've seen a '98 LS1 Z28 running a mufflerless catback and I couldn't believe it! It sounded "alright" up around the super high RPM range but it wasn't very loud at all. I'd go deaf if my muffler ever went on me!!! My buddy up the street from me has a Z28 same year as me with the stock exhaust and I can hear him(even at idle) every time he come and goes - what a mean "musclecar" sound and fairly loud too(although the stock tone was always a bit too raspy for my taste). I've got a flowmaster muffler on mine right now - honestly don't know which series but its very small and is 3" in and 2 x 3" out - and everybody loves the sound. Nice low bass tones especially at 2100 RPM and really rumbly (as opposed to raspy). I'm not sure if the Edelbrock shorties contribute to the sound or the fact that the tailpipes come out as a 3" and actually constrict to a 2 1/4" to fit the stock rectangular tips, but its very unique to say the least. Sure I know I'm losing horse with this restrictive setup but everyone thinks its jokes cause the whole fucking car rocks - especially the exhaust that looks like its doing the funky chicken shaking and clanging around back there. Its like the cam rocks the front and the exhuast shakes the back! Nevertheless, I wouldn't pass up an LS1 for an LT1 based on sound. and I WILL have an LS1(probably a C5) in my stables sooner or later - theres no two ways about it! |

muffler less exhaust dosent always sound louder then an exhaust with mufflers
for example my friend had an old chevy pickup and it had headers and straight pipe on a 350 and it was as quiet as any v6 car around my other friend had a not so old chevy pickup with a 350 and headers with flowmaster series 40 and it shook me when he reved it neither had any mods other then headers |

I have heard the LT1 sounds better. My mother's 97 Z28 has a Flowmaster and it sounds awsome!
I do like the sound of my stock WS6 TA but it is not a deep as the Flowmaster. I have been told the LS1s do not sound good with Flowmasters, but I have not heard them myself. |

Re: LT1 sound vs LS1 sound
What I plan on doing is not caring so much about the catback system or muffler I am getting. I plan on getting a cheap hooker headers exhaust, bust everything out of the catalytic converter, and put a cutout before the cat. Hopefully that'll sound good. Have any of you heard of a similar setup before?

well here it is... , it sucks alot, the quality is horrible, i had to record with a camcorder with a mic and then put the mic on my comp and the speakers from comp to camcorder and recorded the sound from the camcorder, but i think you should get the idea of what it sounds like..., but if you dont like it dont let this change your mind about flowmasters

I had a Z28 with an LT1 with long tube headers and flowmasters and now have a 2001 TA LS-1 with factory exhaust manifolds and Borla exhaust and think the Borla sounds a lot more aggressive

.
Corsaperf.com has sound clips of the LS1 and LT1 with their exhaust systems, judge for yourself.
