Auto to Manual Price?

Just wondering how much it would cost to swap from an Auto to a Manual, if i just took it to a tranny shop and told them to do it all (i saw the post about do it yourself, but i am not the brightest under the hood, and wouldnt want to jack something up) Reason i ask is im in the market for a 240 and i see some real nice ones, but they are all auto, if it would cost around 1500 or less for auto to manual swap, i would consider buying an auto.

also wondering where can i buy a used/new manual tranny?

the only easiest way to do a swap is to find a 240 in the junkyard that's a stick, and tow it to your place of work.

no one will know how to do the swap, you'll prolly have to do it yourself, unless you take it to nissan and pay some big $$$

I dunno, there are a few import garages that might know how to do it. When I had my M30, I somehow found a mechanic less than a mile from my house who used to race Datsun 510s and worked almost exclusively on Nissans. I'm sure he wouldn't have had any trouble swappin a tranny. But of course, nismo-specific mechanics are few and far between. Still though, i'm probably in the same boat as flyinhigh mechanically speaking, and i wouldn't know where to even begin with swapping the transmission. i say call around to local garages (and "speed" shops if you have those) and see if anybody knows what you're talkin about.

yea, my local mechanic used to race old z's too. when i first brought my car over there to have them weld on the exhaust tips, he was like "don't even do this to this car, go get a mustang or camaro". i was "yuck". went over there a couple months ago and i told him im looking at another car, and he said go get a z, he had one up to 160mph, and the steering wheel didn't budge. i took both of his advices and turns out i got a z with a chevy engine.... lol

he'll piss his pants when i bring it over there.

i paid 1500. that was just for all the parts. labor was free. it was my uncles shop so i had the hook-up and tools and junk.

anybody around chicago wanna do an auto-manual swap? i dont mind sharing the wealth man... ill offer $1700....1500 for parts, and 200 for labor

luckily im getting a manual trans unless i find a perfect 240 other than it being auto.

the lowest price ive ever seen it done at was at $700.

you need the following parts.

Pressure plate

Clutch

Flywheel from a m/t

M/T Mounting plate

Flywheel Bolts (m/t bolts are longer than a/t bolts)

Clutch pedal

Brake pedal (From M/T car)

Clutch master cylinder w/ resevoir

Clutch slave cylinder

Clutch hydraulic lines (Main line, bleeder line, rubber line to slave cylinder)

Drive shaft front & rear section

Adapter bolts & nuts for mounting crossmember to the 5 speed (2)

Reverse light sensor, Neutral position sensor, 5th gear sensor (on side of 5 speed)

Lower shift boot & plate

Upper Shift boot & Finisher plate.

now if you go call a dealership and buy all these things brand new, youll reach well over 3.5k

people who say this swap is no sweat never did it.

what i reccommend is what I am personally going to do, and that is, do the 5 speed swap at the same time of my engine swap.... why? cuz u dont have to buy transmision sand stuff, most of stuff comes with front clip,....... and if u are getting someone to install the new engine for u, they will only charge like 300 extra dollars, which isnt that bad

couldnt you just get a s13 5 speed and use it on an s14?

I mean you can get an ok manual s13 for like 700-1000 if its damaged or totaled. Then you could just get a gauge cluster and a few s14 specific pieces and that would be pretty cheap and you have a donor engine to mod if you like KAs and you can sell the parts you don't need to make back most of the money you paid for it.

It's a thought anyway...not sure if there are any differences from the s13 and s14 tranny and mounts and moreover if the sohc might have more different....but I'm not really savy on specifics...I just know theory mostly at this point.

thats right. you can do that cause i have an s13 tranny on my car.

what you recommend is wrong. most clips do not come with all nessecary parts for a tranny swap. the only thing thats guaranteed on a clip is the tranny and everything (most everything) for the engine. and $300? not many shops would do it for that low a price. thinkof the labor. cutting for the clutch pedal and junk.

bottom line is autos are teh suck. i know cause i had one. the stick conversion isnt something like "make your own intake". its not as cheap as everyone claims it to be.

you want stick, wait and find a stick, your better off.

just about any transmission shop that knows how to take out transmissions out of a variety of cars has the knowledge to do this swap. would they? maybe not cause they aren't making too much money on it for the work.

things aren't that difficult, no "modification" has to be done normally, such as welding cutting drilling any of that shit. When a car is made its all setup for the manual or auto, its whatever they stick in there and what parts they use.

for instance, a Clutch pedal will bolt right into your auto car... the holes for it to mount and all should already be there from the factory. Hardest thing would be mounting the clutch resavoir and lines, the tranny will bolt right up in just about 15-20 minutes with proper tools and a lift, it isn't THAT hard.....pretty damn simple actually on FR cars... fwd cars can be a pita, cause usally u gotta drop subframes and shit. On a RWD car, a few connectors, driveshaft, crossmember, mounts, cooler lines, then take out the bolts on the bellhousing and its out...

if you do the convertion, buy a lightweight flywheel and a good clutch..

I've done this swap on an RX-7, and it wasn't that bad, but then again i had like 3 complete 5mt parts cars to use as reference, and to pull parts from.

the hole cut-out was already there as a knock-out, just whacked it acouple times with a punch and a hammer and it popped right out... sprayed it with some coating to prevent rust.

I know of a KILLER S14 AIM me for details... I listed it on here a couple weeks ago.. it was at a high-end dealer... they sold it at an auto auction... then i found it again...

The asking price is like $3K...

I could get it cheaper.... and instead of a 5mt swap, you could do a much more needed swap...

dayna all those evil faces brings up a thought of mine.

Back in the 50's and such people had some bizarre ideas on drag racing setups. I seen pics of even two v8 engines mated together for 4 banks of cylinders, only 2 camshafts hahaha, etc.....

I think one of the best v-12's in the world would be something of that nature.... guess what engines would be mated together

The price of this would be absurd, this sounds like something for TopSecret to accomplish lol, Id love to see that baby fully tuned and exploited, the results and performance would make even a hillbilly with his 53 Ford Pickup, jaw drop.
