Unhappy 83 hard to start

Howdy,

I have an 83 22re Celica, the first start of the day it doest want to start.
If you hold the accelerator down just a little bit and then try to start it, it will usually start and then stall. Repeat the same process it starts again, rev it up just a little bit and it's good to go. It doesn't matter if it's 60 degrees or 100 degrees out it always does it.
This just started about a month ago, before that it started up the first try every time.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

try doing all the basic tune-up things first. new fuel filter, new plugs, new wires (only if yours are bad) new rotor, new cap, pcv valve, make sure all vacuum and electrical connections are right. sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem on start up. i cant really say what because im used to carbs. does your car have a mechanical fuel pump? maybe it needs to be replaced. but id go with the simple stuff first plugs, cap etc. all of it will cost no more than $25 and thats for some good NGK plugs.

That's not a solution to change everything. First, try to find: what causes the problem?

In this case, You gave no information about Your celica:

-what type of (cold) idle system does it have (electric ISC, bi-metallic, wax-type, or electric + coolant controlled)
-what type of engine do You have in your Celica?
-do You checked something?
-does it have cold start injector + bi-metallic time switch?
-how many is the idle rpm at cold and at warmed up engine?
-do you tested the idle system?

etc.

Let me try and answer your questions.

In this case, You gave no information about Your celica:

It's an 83 22re with auto trans. (I hate my auto trans.) other that that I don't know anything more about it.
If there is more to know about it, which I am sure there is, tell me how to find it.

I think it's bi-metallic, not 100% sure though.

-what type of engine do You have in your Celica?

22re that's the only thing I know about it.

It has a cold start injector and I think it's bi-metallic but not sure.

When it starts up it fluctuates from 700 to 900 rpm, once it's idled for a minute or two it levels out at 1000 rpm and is pretty smooth. When it's up to temp it runs at about 1000 rpm.

-do you tested the idle system?

I don't know how to do that.

The car is as stock as it can get

almost sounds like you tps sensor is going out if you rev the engine does the rpm drop really low and then level out when you take your foot of the gas quickly wait a minute does your car even have a throttle position sensor? if so try adjusting it also may be oxygen sensor.

Check the TPS sensor. Buy a book or try to use the online BGB:

http://mr2manual.teq.org/

Test the TPS calibration. All related docs are in the book. Does it give IDLE signal on idle pedal position?

But I must say to check the cold start injector + time switch first. Check out the characteristic of time switch. Does it work on the specified temperature? What is the ambient temperature in morning when the car doesn't start? Then check the cold start injector spray pattern. Start the fuel pump and apply +12 with max 2A (!!!!) to the cold start injector. If You do not have a laboratory power supply with adjustable current limit, then use a serial resistor of 6 Ohm 10 W. Else You will destroy the injector. Ispect how it sprays the fuel?

Report the results.

Hi guys,

This morning when I tried to start it up, it was 58 degrees out.
I decided to try a new method to try and start it, I turned the key to the run position (did not crank it) and then pressed the accelerator all the way to the floor and back. I did it again and then waited half a second and then I tried to start it. It fired up the first time almost instantly. If it had a carb I could understand how that helped, but being an EFI I don't see how that could have done anything to help. When I turn the key to the run position it does not turn the fuel pump on, so I know that wasn't the trick. Any thoughts on that could have helped?
Yes it does have a tps. I haven't had the time to do those other tests yet.

Smile Problem Solved

It turned out to be a dirty fuel filter.
Surprising how dirty it can get in 10,000 miles.

I would still check your fuel pump relay... My lincoln would turn over no start yada yada... with some pedal and waiting it would start... I changed the fuel filter and for about a month it worked great... then it started doing the same... i couldn't start it after a couple days even.. as soon as i changed the fuel pump relay.. it worked great and has since
