more engine help...

i was just wondering, on my revell enzo, the engine calls for mostly aluminum, so if i painted the parts tamiya flat aluminum and then clear coated with tamiya x-22, would i get a nice, metal looking finish? o, and i am brush painting everything, cept big parts of course, with a model master #2 pure red sable.

thanks

You can also try Tamyia silver leaf TS30 and cover it with your favorite dullcoat.. very convinving aluminum finish... very flat and looks like real metal.. use veriety of paints to create a realistic look.

For a very convincing cast aluminum finish, I use Testor's aluminum plate buffing metalizer spray. I then over coat this with a clear flat using an old brush. The idea here is to pounce the clear flat on in a quick up and down motion with an almost dry brush. Just keep working and dabbing over the area until the clear flat starts to tack up and the texture of cast aluminum is realized. The particles of the metalizer are toned down yet the color is dead on.

As with any technique, it is best to practice this on a scrap piece of plastic until you feel comfortable with your own results.

thanks for the tips guys, but one question, why a flat/dull clear coat? i thought mettalics, such as flat aluminum, should be covered in a gloss clear coat, like tamiya clear gloss x-22, or should aluminum look flat? In which case, should i use tamiya flat base? also, will tamiya flat base or gloss x-22 ruin my brush? o, and Lambo003, thanks again, lots of help from you, much appreciated.

thanks

You're welcome theT.

Yeah, cast aluminum has a flat finish and almost a gray-ish looking in color with metallic highlights.

This is the look you're shootin' for . . .

Sure can. Treat clean-up just as you would with any other acrylic paint.

Do you mean flat clear? Flat base will ruin your paint (turn hazy), if used as a overcoat. Just making sure.
