I have a 2000 Malibu with around 49000 miles. Recently, it too started sputtering and dying while driving. We were on vacation the first time it happened. We thought we might just need more gas (on a steep incline w/ about a 1/4 tank) So we got to the nearest gas station, got a little gas and put it in....that got us to the middle of the next hill, did the same thing again, it started back up and we got to the station and filled up. Everything was fine after that. Then it started the same thing on the way home, in the pouring rain, I might add. We took to the nearest chevy service shop, they said it was the fuel filter, changed it. and we hoped that would be the end of it. Not the case. In a day or so it started sputtering, and a couple days later it was died again. It will start again, but doesn't stay that way for long. Took it to the nearest chevy service again. They have had it a week, and finally got it to fail for them yesterday. Apparently its the fuel pump...a mere $530.00 to replace! I'm wondering, should this really be happening in a 3 yr old car? I was raised to always buy Chevy, but the quality seems to be lacking and even my once steadfast chevy fan father says he will never buy another one. I'm worried this will just be the start of my problems, and we're thinking about just trading it in. Any suggesstions?

Hi there...I had the same problem with my 2000 Malibu. I replaced the fuel pump and haven't had a problem with my car since then. If you haven't already done so, I would recommend having the FP replaced. Let us know how it turns out...good luck!

Same thing happened to me and I'm in the process of having the fuel pump replaced. According to the chevy dealer I took it to they have discontinued the fuel pump. Don't you think they would recall it since it's defective. Hope this takes away my problem

We did have the fuel pump replaced and that seems to have done the trick. We are also wondering why chevy didn't recall it. I can tell you this, this is the last chevy I will own. Sad to see they have let customer service go by the wayside.
