Drift Bible Review
Ok I got it in the Mail today ahead of schedule so I was happy.
Popped it into the DVD player... and I actually enjoyed watching the "Drift King" do his thing. I've got a lot of respect for drifting now. It's sparked an interest for me, I'll now be scouting out possible 'drift machines'... probably not but ya never know. Drag racing is fun.. but Ugh... [asian accent] You go straight line... no turn... what fuck? [/asian accent] So, some sorta closed course racing might be in my future. ANYWHO... I think the overall quality of the DVD is like 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. The commentary is very helpful in understanding the techniques and driving types. Camera angles and mulitple views are also nice. A good buy if you're like me who's interested in learning more about Drifting. Or if you're a drifter looking for help/pointers. "I taught Initial D all he knows..." - Keiichi "Drift King" Tsuchiya

Just got my copy about an hour ago. I've been rewinding and searching back and forth over the video. The music is a little loud and more chapter marks would make the DVD more usable, but overall it's the best thing I've found so far. The biggest disappointment is the lack of information on set-up, I suppose they were trying to emphasize the greater importance of the driver's skill. The cars have brake lights on the front bumper. There's telemetry and footbox video on the lower left corner of the screen. You even see "G-Balls" - a set of pink balls that move about on camera to show the g-loading of the car. The DVD starts with the components of proper drift, demonstrating the six main types of drift: Side, Shift Lock, Power Over, Braking, Feint and Lift Off.
Later, he visits a parking-lot with cones, and demonstrates the first few moves a beginner should master, along with common pitfalls. He mentions common pitfalls, including the importance of maintainance, and advice on recognizing a worn LSD. After the lot, he moves to a drift practice track, where he shows more common pitfalls. Worth the price alone is one pitfall he explains here. He steers too far and too late, and the car starts to get upset by the steering and countersteering. I've done this a couple of times in my Miata. Tsuchiya isn't too much of a purist, mostly interested in the most effective ways to get the car around a corner with the proper attitude, even with the e-brake. He covers several cars, using the S14 Silvia for most driving, then switching to a S13 to demonstrate understeering car technique. For oversteering, he chooses a 2nd gen MR2, and finally, he takes an AE86 around the track to demonstrate technique for cars with little power, warning that while the AE86 is a very fun, capable car, it can be harder to master. Perfect? No, but quite good. He mentions proper seating position and stresses it's importance, but never explains what proper position is. He also assumes proper heel-toe technique. These things are a little out of the scope of drifting, falling more into proper standard driving technique. I'd suggest reading a book on standard grip driving to get the most out of the video. At the end is some bonus footage, including some fun race footage, including an illuminating race between a stock WRX STi and a WRC prepared race WRX STi, and a dubious race between an AE86 and a MR-2 Spyder. Oh, and race girls. Lots of race girls. |

What he said...
I think when he says proper seating position, he means not having the seat tilted back with one hand on the wheel and where you can barely see over the dash like them... hard core Thugs. ![]() He was using a very basic racing seat, which kept him planted infront of the wheel and left him in control of the car 100% of the time. The proper heel-toe technique is something he obviously assumes you know how to do already... oh well, guess it's another thing to practice.

There's a bit more to seating position than that. You want to have a proper relationship between your upper-body and the wheel so that you have enough room to move your arms, but still maintain comfort and leverage. At the same time, you don't want to mess up your relationship with the pedals. Most sit too close to the wheel. YMMV, as everyone is different, but I try to get a position so that the wheel is just far enough out that the wheel at 12 o'clock is just within reach. If my arm is really bent, I'm much too close. I am actually glad that he did not stress the setup of a "drift" car.
Yes there are nick nacks that can make drifting a bit easier or more so fine tune what you are doing but those items are usually thought as of what is needed to get the car sideways. I think seat time and practice is the best. Parts can be a major downfall and can be huge crutches. I have friends that have beautiful cars that are set for drifting. Bars everywhere, power, lsd, clutch you name it they got it. But they don't know what to do. They rely on power over and end up not doing to well. I enjoyed the video. It put names to some of the things I have been trying since I pretty much have no clue or direction.

Re: Drift Bible Review
Ladies and gentlemen,
I just received a copy of the Drift Bible from http://www.performancecardvds.com for review as a good friend of mine runs that store. For that reason, I would like to personally recommend PerformanceCarDVDs.com as a place to get your racing videos and be sure to mention Igor sent you (it will make Noel feel cozy :-p )
