Distributor Timing Help!

i need a little help with my timing. i have a 1995 jimmy with a 4.3L.

it has the HVS high voltage switch (distributor). How exactly do i set the distributor in place? what is the best way to find TDC? and the easiest!

once i have TDC where exactly do i want the pointer on the rotor to be facing?

the Chilton book said to get TDC and then set the rotor pointer to a little #6 that is printed inside the cap, which would put it pointing at the number 2 contact. it didn't sound right to me and it didn't Work!

getting a little backfire, but that is all.
i think the computer is suppose to take over and correct the timing once you get it close.

anyway, if anybody has some complete details on how to get TDC and then where exactly the pointer on the rotor should be facing, it would be greatly appreciated!

thanx,
sittyboy

take out #1 plug, turn engine over with finger over hole (disable fuel pump or ECM first so you dont accidentaly start it) when you are on compression stroke of #1 TDC. have the rotor pointing to #1 wire. Since your timing is also controlled by the computer/ignition module, you have to set base timing with the EST disabled. Once you have base timing set, you can re-activate the EST.
