newbie got a question

Hello all,

Just registered after finding this forum site. Hopefully someone here can help. I own an 86 El Camino with the stock 305 and 4 speed AT tranny. My question is the "Service Engine Soon" light has been staying on and doesn't shut off anymore. Use to be that it would shut off after 5 minutes or so, but now it stays on indefinetly. Does this mean I really need to have it service by a qualified mechanic or is it something simple the my weekend mechanic skills can handle? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: newbie got a question

its throwing a code,a weekend mechanic can fix it in 5 minutes if he has the right tool, or you can go and pay the 85 an hour diagnostic rates at the local shop.
