+'s and -'s of aftermarket cam gear and installation

I have a 1.6 liter SOHC 2000 Civic EX and was wondering what kind of improvements in HP and torque I could expect if I went with a AEM or OBX aftermarket aftermarket cam gear. i was also wondering if this is a project I could take on myself or if it was something I should leave for the experts. Thanks

A cam gear is pretty much useless on a SOHC engine & you will gain very little if anything. You could do it yourself - get a repair manual

cam GEAR?
a cam gear will probably not add any hp increase <1%
u can change the cam gear yourself easily

or acual cams?
the cam will add much more difference than a cam gear
I dont know what a cam would add on a SOHC ...
but on my engine(DOHC vtec) my cams added 25 hp and ~10 lb/ft torque
changing cams will not be quite as easy... they require a valve adjustment.. which require some funky tools.. which i dont have.. and you probably dont have either hehe.

arent cam gears really only a benefit for DOHC so you can adjust exhaust and intake valve timing independantly?

Yes, DOHC are better for Cam gear(s) they will actually have a gain when adjusted correctly unlike SOHC.

if you have the stock cam in it you will do nothing but screw up you power band and kill you 1/4 mile times.

If you wnat real hp's you should save up and get a motor swap and that will open up a whole new door for potental power.

Not really. I asked a mechanic for a professional track team if I wasted my money on a camshaft and cam gear combination (mine is a SOHC as well with the I/H/E thingie; 125hp stock), and he said it's a good investment (he also gave me some other good tips). So in short it does benefit the SOHC as well, but only if it goes with the camshaft.
