So my bro's gurl friend has an escort and were changing the axle on it right now. But it won't come out of the tranny. Is there anything that we should know about that were not doing. We've pressed a pry bar up against the tranny and trying prying it out. Help please.

Re: Drivers side axle
Had the same problem myself--here is how I solved it.
I got about 10 feet of nylon rope--made a loop around the CV joint--right up against the tranny--hooked the other end to a car bumper and put a strain on it--get underneath with a 2 pound hammer and give the inner part of the CV joint a tap it popped right out. It has a kind of snap ring on the part that inserts into the transaxle--you will see that after you get it out--that ring will snap in place when you reassemble. Now some cautions--You can not pull on the outer part of the axle/CV as that will cause the 2 pieces of the axle to seperate at the CV joint then you just throw the whole mess away and go buy a rebuilt. (the CV is inside the rubber boot) DONOT try this unless you have the car up on jackstands!! Good sturdy jackstands because if you misjudge the taking up of tension on the axle it will all come crashing down. You could also try to put pressure on the CV joint where you were prying before and then have someone tap on the CV joint while applyng pressure with the pry bar. A coffin hoist may also work. You may have to get a smaller dia. rope so it will fit behind the CV at the tranny. Good luck and let me know. Bob |
