Everybodies got one.
It seems that there are just so many 3 series BMWs out and about. Don't get me wrong I think BMWs are great but I just want something a bit different. Jaguar has created a great car and great option for someone who might otherwise buy a Bimmer. What does everyone think?

Agree. While the 3-series is certainly the bench mark for the class, the X-Type is a very nice alternative. We looked at several cars including the Bimmer, Infiniti I-35, Lexis ES 300, and Nissan Maxima. The Bimmer is a bit too tight inside and commands a hefty premium for the name. The Lexus was dripping in comfort but lacked a manual and wasn't very sporty in nature. The Infiniti and Nissan were both nice, but very bland and easily lost in the croud.
The X-Type was visually compelling, performed and handled well, has the all-wheel drive and offers a manual. The package was very competively priced, and flat-out has presence and character. It doen't get lost in the parking lot! We bought a British racing green 2.5 5-speed. The dealer was first-rate, the sales rep very knowledgable, and the overall experience satisfying. We're looking forward to many engaging and entertaining miles. See ya out on the road. |

Well, over here in ENGLAND. We also have the 3 series by the bucket load. It seems everyone has one and, as written here already, they are the rightful thrown holders in this market segment.
However, one has to understand that these cars are mostly used as a transport device for employees who travel to and from various current and potential customers offering a service or product. And in many circumstances help to portray an image or indeed successfulness. The 3 series has flooded the market and exclusiveness is a bygone occurrence. The Jag however, offers that little something else. I was in the car park to the Trafford Centre in Manchester the other day and next to each other was a 3 series M coupe, and a bog standard X-Type, Only after looking at the Jag for a few seconds as I walked past, then looked behind did I even notice the ‘Exclusive M’! That I feel said it all! I’m not too sure about the situation over in America, but here in ENGLAND, and indeed the rest of Europe, Diesel variants make up for 60 – 70 percent of all car sales of these models. Jaguar until last month had no diesel engines in its line-up so offered very little to the overall sales. They are now selling a fantastic diesel engine taken from the ford mondeo range. It has been a long time coming but I cannot believe what Jaguar has done to it! It hardly sounds like a diesel, its very quite! And there is no shaking under the foot as classically noted from other diesels. I think Jaguar will start to sell a hell of a lot more cars sooner rather than later! TBL |

Love the Baby Jag
I comparison shopped the 325i against the X-Type in May 03. The BMW was too small, lacked trunk room, and its performance was dissappointing. Bought a Jag X-Type 2.5 automatic. Have put 10000 miles on her and enjoy every minute I'm driving her. This little kitty is a great interstate flyer. Have had no problems other than local dealer is a little flaky on technical expertise.

Hi,
My parents were shopping for a car back in fall of 2002. My dad wanted AWD and some room for passengers in the back. We looked at the BMW 325Xi, A4 1.8T Quattro, Mercedes C240 AWD, and.... the newer X-Type. The X-Type was in its second year then. The A4 had barely any room in the back and the mercedes was underpowerd and cost a lot more. We narrowed it down to either the 325Xi or X-Type. We test drove both and the BMW had better handling but was a little underpowered compared to the Jag. Our last deciding point was that in my dad's work parking lot, every car is either an Audi, BMW, Mercedes, or Lexus. I went there one day and saw 10 3-Series car sitting there.....But not a single Jaguar. We bought the 2003 Jaguar X-Type 2.5 Automatic. The first day my dad drove it too work it became a conversaiton piece and everyone wanted to see it. I like the car and am very happy with it. It's the best looking of all the bunch.

These cars do tend to draw a crowd. I've had numerous people walk up at gas stations, food places, and rest stops wanting to take a close look at the Jag. Only problem is - keeping her washed and waxed - so she always puts her best foot forward. British Racing Green is hard to keep clean. Hope your parents are enjoying the Jag as much as I enjoy mine.

Re: Everybodies got one.
Trying to decide between Merdes C240 and BMW 325i. Drive around town - Los Angeles -- Valley area mostly. How do these cars do going up hill? It seems like there are a lot of both cars and is it me or do BMW owners seem, I don't know, obnoxious abit. Or are C240 drivers stuffy and pretentious?

Re: Everybodies got one.
I don't think you can really generalise people like that. I mean, if you bought one of those cars, you wouldn't automatically behave like that.

I looked at both these cars before buying an X-Type 2.5. They're very nice, but neither of them impressed wife and I enough to go the price. In addition, neither of them offered AWD except at a big dollar premium.
Funny - but had folks climb out of Merc's and BMWs and walk over to take a look at my Jag. No matter what you buy - get the car that hits your hot buttons, and, forget about everybody else. Then drive and enjoy it. Regards: Oldengineer |

But anyway, I think the Benzs have lost a lot of their MB charm and classic looks over the past few years. I've had a 92 300E for 12 years since new and will not consider another MB because they are looking more like those Toyota Lexus, or Nissan Infinitis, or Honda Acuras all the time.. ...Anyway, the people driving Jags seem to be just as snooty as all the rest ![]() But the JAUAR X-Type, they are by far the most elegant and classic, yet sleekest cars in this class IMO

I live in the USA and love domestic cars but when lookin for a new ride I decided I wanted a euro luxury toy. I looked at Bimmers Benzs and the lot but when looking around town (I live in Columbus IN USA home of Cummins engine company, Enkei, NTN, Onkyo etc... the japanese companies aren;t home based but the manufacturing plants are right here hence lots of money in this little town) I saw everywhere Bimmers Benzs Lexuses etc.. But very very very few Jags. I decided on a Jag and I have not yet seen another X-Type a few older Jags and one newer S-Type. My baby stands out in a crowd and gets looks and compliments everywhere I go. Just yesterday a guy in a new Lexus SUV at the gas station said to me "Damn nice car you must really have fun in that." I just shook my head yes and pumped my gas and then drove away with a big grin on my face. Even my neighbor who has a new Benz said the Jag will be there next car after looking riding and driving the CAT.
