They are notorious for having sunroof problems. They are also known to have fuel pump and alternator problems, but not all cougars have these. I've had mine for a couple of years now, and have had no real problems.

Angry Mixed Feelings.

Well.. I have a 99 cougar.. I've had it for approx 6 months and it has a serious problem with starting.. The starter was replaced today & to my dissapointment.. ITS STILL NOT STARTING 100% OF THE TIME .. It makes this horrible grinding sound instead.. very frustrating.. Besides that.. & the trunk switch that has ALSO failed.. its a cute car, my moonroof has no problems & it runs smoothly when i do get it started.. aha..

Re: Do you guys have problems with your coug?

I've had my Cougar for 2 and 1/2 years now and ::knock on wood:: have had no huge problems. As xbluesx said, new Cougars are famed for having fuel pump, alternator and sunroof issues. IMO, if you're shopping around for a new Coug, look at '01 models or later. Most of the issues were resolved after 2000. Take everyone's opinion, then do your research and test drive a Coug and form your own. I love my Coug. Good luck!

Re: Do you guys have problems with your coug?

im a 17yr old girl and I guess I didn't research the car enough but I would definitly recommend you not getting one. I've had it almost a year and I've had nothing but problems with it. Right now my starters going, it's making a funny noise and it vibrates when I stop. I don't know if mine is just BAD but don't get one.

Re: Do you guys have problems with your coug?

Well I have owned mine for six months now. It is a 1989 Mercury Cougar LS. The care is in pretty rough shape as far as body and interior is concerned. I bought it fro ma friend for $400 and it runs and drives perfect. The engine is a 3.8L v-6 with only 125,000 miles on it. The problem I had with it was the back brakes but that was like that when I bought it. The dash is all digital read out and everything is electronic so the battery was an issue. After those two things were fixed, the car runs and handles like a dream. I love it.

Wink love my cougar

i have a 1994 cougar xr-7 with the 4.6 V8. This is a great car and i have had no major problem with it except just maintenance (oil change, spark plugs) The only problem i really have is the tranny shifts hard into 2nd gear, but no big!

Re: Do you guys have problems with your coug?

I have a 2000 and mine has every problem listed on this board. It's good to look at but I would buy a YUGO instead if I could go back in time.
