My wife is heartbroken that our new 5-speed Wagon doesn't have a hill-holder clutch like the '95 we traded in did. The Subaru Australia and South Africa sites both indicate that the 5-speed Legacy/Liberty/Outback comes with this feature in those countries, so I'm hoping that a retrofit is possible.
Could anybody please tell me what would be involved (in terms of parts and wrenching) to retrofit a hill holder clutch in a 2004 US model, 4 cylinder, 5 speed Legacy/Outback wagon? TIA Interesting that the Liberty in Australia is a Legacy elsewhere, while the Liberty in the US is a Jeep! |

The '04 Forester comes with the 'Hill Holder' system so you could possibly retrofit it from that, what you have to keep in mind is that fitting the different set up will very likely void the warranty.
The reason for the naming difference for Australia is due to ownership issues for the name 'Legacy'in Australia whereas in the rest of the world Subaru are able to use Legacy as the name.
