944 overheating

I just got a 1983 944 Porsche. It was running fine the first day. Then it started blowing hot air only from the vents. The temperature gauge is way up and the car won't start once I shut it off. I had to strap it to a pick up to start it the other day.
I nead some serious help. Thanx in advance for your advice.

oddly enough i just had about the same problem...
the thermostat was stuck shut causing the overheating, so i replaced it with a low temp thermostat. the job looked easy, but on a 1-10 scale of frustration it was 11! to get the snapring out of the deep thermostat housing took me four days! i ended up grinding down the end of a pair of bent nose needle nose pliers so the ends would fit in the snap ring holes. but now that it is in, the needle doesn't go higher than the 1/3 notch on the eng temp gauge. after that, the car wouldn't hold a charge. i found that the thermal fan switch was stuck on, and needed to be replaced (much easier).
in fact, my low temp fanswitch just arrived today from perfrormanceproducts.com, i'm putting it in tomorrow.

oh, and the hot air is usually caused by a broken plastic clip that moves a flap adjusting the hot/cold mix.
the parts are like $3 at your porsche dealer.
to get to it you go through the right side of the driver's foot well.
there are 3 screws that hold on a plastic cover. take off the cover and the electric motor and broken clip shoutld be right there. its pretty self explanitory...

my 83 had the same problem last summer......

Check out the rediator, i had to get a new one... It was leaking coolant from 3 places!!!!!

If you want a good price on a radiator and the hoses (replaced them while everything else was out) check out Tweeks. they have good prices!

If it is the radiator, it's pretty expensive. With a 944, the radiator comes out the bottom of the car, and it takes much more time to get the radiator out.
