Hey, What's up?
According to the Haynes Manual, you do have to drop the tank to get at the pump. Once you have the tank off, it doesn't appear to be that hard. check your local library, they might have a Haynes Manual that you could check out. These manuals helped me big time on both my van and my truck. other than that, thats all I can tell you. I fortunately haven't had to replace the fuel pump (yet), but I hope this helps. Good luck. |

Re: 1995 caravan fuel pump install
Trust me, it can be very hard, especially if your tank has fuel in it. raize the rear of the van on ramps. Block all wheels, and put emercency brake on. ***Disconnect the battery****Spray the two large bolts on gas tank straps a couple of days before a few times with a good penetrating oil. You will need a half inch drive and a strong arm to lossen them. Open gas filler cap and remove the three or four screws holding it. This will allow you to wiggle and separate the fuel tube from the tank when you start to lower the tank. Note, there is also a breather hose in thr same area that must be removed before lowering the tank all the way. ***You will have to relieve the pressure in your fuel line and syphon out the extra gas***. You will need a floor jack and a peice of wood like a 2 by 12 to spread out the weight of the tank. Less chance of damaging the tank. Dissconnect the three hoses quite visible at the rear of the tank. They are all different sizes so you won't get mixed up replacing them. Get a freind to help, loosen the big tank strap bolts and lower slowly. When it's low enough, reach up and disconnect the sending unit plugs on top the tank. Pay attention to any hoses connected near the filler tube. After a little wiggling and four hands you should be able to remove the tank. Once removed lay the tank on the ground . The three rear hoses you disconnected before removing the tank is the fuel pump. Tank empty, use a brass puntch and hit the lock ring counter clockwise with quite a blow. Again a little bit of penitrating oil, or wd-40 will help. ***Be carful when removing the fuel pump for when it is half way out you will see a plastic hose connector that has to be carefully unclipped****.
Get a Book from the library and a good freind and your set. Oh!, it would be advisable to grease the filler tube end with white grease before attempting to reinstall it in the tank.Good luck |

Re: 1995 caravan fuel pump install
does anyone else find it amusing that yale said to put the emergency brake on before you lift the rear wheels off the ground? sorry yale, had to ask. very informative explanation. i wish i had some penetrating oil with me when i did my fuel pump. i was terrified that i was going to blow myself up. i had to do it in a pharmacy parking lot an hour from my house at 3 in the morning. a very interesting experience. i had to let the tank sit in the trunk for a day while i went to get the pump.

Re: 1995 caravan fuel pump install
Proticus, Sorry, I misread your note. I got mixed up using to computors. Comes with age. Anyway I enjoyed your remark about the emergency brake. We all put our brakes on at the wrong time, somtimes. And like I said we men just hate that, oh!, I meant we, not whee.

Hell, 3:00 in the morning? ***Bet you didn,t put your emergrncy on????*** Also bet you you were more concernrd with the fumes you were penetrated with, and forgot you even removed your tank till the next day, when you relized your vehicle was not home. Jokes aside, that is why a new fuel filter and fuel pressure test are so important when you suspect a problem. Manitoba, Canada

Re: 1995 caravan fuel pump install
actually i didn't use the e-brake. the e-brake is pointless if the rear tires are in the air. i had the rear on jack stands, and the front end up against a high curb. and i never suspected a problem. it just decided it didn't like it's job, and quit. bastard didn't even give me a two week notice.
