American Muscle Car era

Whatever happened to the idea of packing as much horsepower and torque possible under one hood?? It was no doubt the greatest era for American car manufacturers and it went downhill after that. I feel they should bring it back. It would be a huge punch in the face to those riceboys who think they got game and would certainly gain back the much deserved respect for American cars.

But they would still break down faster. I'd rather have a car that handled great rather than a ton of power.

While we're at it, why not bring back leaf springs and three speed gearboxes?

Agree with you on this one. A 700 skyline can outrun any old or modern american muscle on the track. American cars are like boats on the road, with plenty of torque that is useless.

Get a clue, without torque you'd have no horsepower.

And a 700 what Skyline?

News flash, the Skyline IS NOT GOD. It can be beaten. I'll admit, old muscle cars stock can't beat it, sure cause that was over 30 years ago. I'd hope the Skyline could beat some old car for the price you pay for it.

But a 700hp Muscle car properly setup will give a 700hp Skyline a run for its money, possibly beating it.

A modern Muscle car like a Viper... or a Z06 Vette, possibly even a '03 Cobra modified to the 700hp mark can hang with a Skyline as well and... shit.. possibly beat it.

Gee Golly Whiskers...

Can you Imagine? A car faster than a Skyline? I can.

Note: I have tons of respect for the Skyline, awesome car. Really is, just it is NOT god.

LOL.

Have you read-up on any of the recent cars that have been/are going to be built? The GTO, a hemi-powered Dodge car, the Viper, the Z06, the '03 Cobra?

If you're talking about having similar TQ-to-HP figures within the same motor, all the above have that. In that list also, you'll have to add:
  • The more recent Honda V6's
  • The Subaru WRX
  • The Subaru WRX-STi
  • The Mitsubishi Lancer EVO
  • The Dodge SRT-4
  • The B15 Sentra SE-R/SE-R SpecV
  • Etc., etc....
Now, what was the point of this thread again? Besides starting flames?

my boss has a 1969 Z28 and guess how many times he's driven it this year? O! Because everytime he fixes something, something else breaks. Personally, I'd like to have a car that I can actually drive.

I'd have to disagree with the Skylines no good thing. Besides a 700hp GTR is gonna be a lot lighter than a 700hp Cobra or some huge F body muscle car. Add in the AWD factor and you have a hard to beat lanch. Now I'm not flaming muscle cars either, I still think that all the Turbo squealin, BOV wooshin will never sound as cool as a Big block Fire breathing V8. Gets me hard just thinkin bout it.

The Skyline isn't a Civic... stop thinking Ricers for a moment and look up some specs. Its well over 3000lbs... 3432lbs to be exact. Heavier than the Corvette Z06 by 200lbs... Same weight as a 4th Gen F-body.

Interesting little tid bit I also found.

R34 GT-R Info gathered from: Skyline-Nissan.com, Automotivearticles.com

Price: $45,000 ($89,500 US)
Horsepower 277 bhp @ 6800 rpm
Torque 293 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm

Acceleration

0-60 mph: 4.7
0-100: 12.7
0-1320 ft (1/4 mile): 13.7 @ 103.5 mph

Maximum Lateral G: 0.94g

Corvette Coupe

Price: $45,000 (US)
Horsepower 345 @ 5600 rpm
Torque 350 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm

Acceleration

0-60: 4.8
0-100: 10.2
0-1320 ft (1/4 mile) 13.1 @ 109mph

Maximum Lateral G: 0.93g

As much as I hate 'mag racers' but these specs show me alot. A Corvette (non Z06) is more than a match for a stock Skyline. In both 1/4 mile and road racing. Start modifying each car and these variables change depending on what is done.

But here is my answer to the 700hp Skyline. Mallet C5

Personally, I think that the majority of the muscle cars from the muscle car era, are vastly over rated.
Most of these large engined, fuel swilling beasts could do the quarter mile in just about 15 seconds (give or take a very small ammount)
Even the famous Shelby GT-350 only pulls off about 15 second times.

Of course it all goes back to the simple question of one's end justifying the means.
I mean by today's standards a Road Runner 383 or Olds 442 is unreliable, unsafe, and huge polluter and gas waster. One thing's for sure though - they do look better than anything being made today!
And anything that can do the quarter mile in under 16 seconds is fast by my book - even though with today's technology cars which are far more efficient, safe etc. are showing good performance too.

Now we don't have to have eight cylinders to go that fast, or get less than 20mpg either.
I have a story in the Yugo forums I posted about somebody who's running a naturally aspirated Yugo that'd beat alot of the old muscle cars (if they were stock) at the quarter mile, with about a three fourths less engine.

EDIT:
I thought I'd also list the three biggest things that killed the muscle car era, and respect for American cars.

3: Pinto
2: Vega
1: Gremlin (at least the Pacer wasn't that bad)

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there.
50 Fastest Muscle Cars

That shows that the majority of the muscle cars from the muscle car era actually broke well past the 15s... all stock on crappy tire technology.

Given slicks and headers, most muscle cars could tear up the 1/4 like no other. Factory exhaust is just terrible...

For instance, the 1969 Camaro ZL1 with a All Aluminum race breed 427 made an advertised 430hp (highly underated). The car ran low 13s stock, with slicks and headers it ran 11.6 @ 122mph. Also came with a 5 year/50,000 mile warranty. Pretty sweet for 1969.

If only Chevy got their heads out of their asses and built another car comparable to that again. I know... don't hold my breath...
