me vs corvette convertible

Both of us sorta flirted with eachother on the freeway, gunning it here and there, and both got off at the same exit stopping at a red light. Some wealthy looking bozo was in the seat, started revving and it was on. When the light turned green he let me go first, then he tried catching up. We had about a 1/4 mile stretch to the next light and I'm positive he had it floored. No way would I beat this thing had he started with me, but he slowwwwly caught up. I can't believe my ~195hp civic can hang with a vette. Are the convertibles slower than the base hardtops?

You're carrying about 11lbs per-hp and he is carrying about 9lbs per-hp...so, no...your car wouldn't normally hang. I've seen a video of a slightly-modded SRT-4 getting absolutely DESTROYED by a stock six speed C5.

If the 'vert was an M6, he probably either short-shifted, underestimating your car, or missed a gear. If it was an A4, he underestimated your car again, and put himself in a bad position...probably at a speed where the tranny didn't kickdown when he punched it, and bogged his motor. Also, depending on how fast you were going already when he stepped on it, he probably would've had to take very dangerous speeds (again, underestimating how far you would be after he let you go)...fast enough where he wouldn't be able to stop in time after proving that he's faster...he thought better about it and would've rather looked bad than have himself/somebody else/his car hurt.

underestimating your car
It happens a lot leading to semi-false wins. I guess that's a good thing, car's not stolen yet

from what i know about convertables... i believe that convertables are heavier than hardtops because the electronics so to speak that it takes to make a convertable "convert" are pretty heavy compared to just hardtoppin it... i hope i didnt confuse u....

o ya.. i could be wrong but thats what ive read and heard

How would that confuse me?
The electronics and motors involved would be like 50 lbs tops so that's nothing major.. I thought performancewise they had less horsepower.

how much of a head start did he give you? cuz i know even with cars i can beat, if they get a head start, takes forever to catch them.

I don't know I gunned it right away and he was probably about 3-4 car lengths away before I saw his headlights jerk.

Just to answer the question about the convertible being slower, it's not rated at any less horsepower than the hardtopped models. It has to do with the fact that there is no stability given to the car by a proper roof. They have to make up for that by strengthening the rest of the car with more material, therefore making it heavier. Both are rated at the same hp level regardless.

I'd like to know what generation of vette it was. If it was an early eighties vette then I know you could take him without the other driver missing a shift or something equally as time consuming. A C5 on the other hand means he sure doesn't know how to drive his car. He should have ate you up. But good job - a win is a win because the race is between the drivers not the cars potentials.
