Question about Obtaining a code

I have a 95 honda Civic EX, and my engine light has come on. I brought it to Autozone to get the code but they said they cant do it for my car. I have found the harness thanks to other postings on this site, but I don't know how to get the code.

Is there a harness I can buy and hook it up to my laptop?

Is there a program for my laptop I can use to get the code, and monitor stuff?

Is there somewere else I can take it for a free diagnostic?

Is there really an Easter Bunny?

I would just rather spend the money on an O2 sensor or something than drop $75 at my local dealership for them to do 2 seconds worth of work.

I have a 92 civic LX and I THINK it should be the same as mine but here goes.. go to your ECU (computer) on the passenger side. Pull open the carpet on the passenger side floor and you should see your computer. Around there you should see a wire (connector) just hanging around connected to nothing. get a paper clip or whatever to make those 2 contacts touch. Make sure it stays in there. now turn on your ignition and your engine light should blink the code. Hope this helps.

Thats a good start, but a bit vague... I found the two wires that hang down to the right of my glove box, with the blue plastic ends. These should be the harness conectors, as I have seen pics in this forum of the same model car illustrating the location. Are these the wires your talking about? They look like plugs and don't seem to have any "contacts".

I pulled up the rug, and found what might be the computer mounted to the lower right hand passenger side against the wall. It was a metal box with a metal clamp across it to hold it in place. I'm scared to go near it.

When you say the light will blink, you mean the one in the gauge cluster that is on now? Or one (an LED) in the ecu box? I was told by an X honda tech that they had LED's in the box that would blink the code.

the Engine light blinks. I read this somewhere so then Im like "Lemme try that" So I went and unplugged the oxygen sensor and my check engine light went on. So I pulled the rug, saw a connector hanging.. has 2 holes in it. stuck a wire to make the 2 contacts touch, then the check engine light blinked 4 long flashes and 3 short ones. I looked up the code in my book and what do ya know... it was telling me there was a problem with the sensor (cuz I unplugged it hehe) I love this sceme that honda will use... they charge you for telling you what the light is on for. Actually I just looked in the manual and it said that there is probbably a lil cover on the connnector and it says to use a small screw driver to remove the cover... Let me know the code and I will tell you what it means

Here is what jumping it should look like, and in order to do it, you need to have the car off, jump the connector, and turn the key to the asscessory position, the check engine light will give you a series of blinks, long is the first number and short is the second, for example as said above four long and three short is a 43.

I will let you know what happens... I have a chilton manual and I'll try to look it up myself, If I can't figure it out I'll post the blink code. I appriciate the offer though.

I will still most likely post the pics of what is under my rug, and you guys can mabey let me know if it is the ECU or not.

Ok,

I did the paper clip trick, turned the ignition to the on position, and got the blink code.

4 Long
1 Short

Chilton was kind enough not to include these codes in thier 40 dollar book, so if any of you know what this is please let me know.

I'm attaching some more pics of my 95 civic ex coupe so others with the exact same car know what to look for when searching for thier harness, to reasearch the check engine light.

41 means "Oxygen Sensor Heater". In the book it says "Check the heater for the proper voltage signal". Who knows, you may have to replace that sensor. You'll get better milage also. Hope this helps. MUCH better than having someone you charge a crap load of money just to tell you that. They claim to have to go through ALOT of work just to find out what the engine code is and they hook your car up to those dandy big diagnostic machines.

Look, if your going to be working on your ar, there is NO substitute for a Helms service manual. They are the compnay that prints them for Honda, and you can buy them on line for around $65. And they are worth evey penny. If you stack a Chiltons, that covers 11 year worth of civics and the Haynes which is a LITTLE better on top of each other, they are about the same thickness as the Helms for ONE year. Don't waste you time or money on the other shit books that leave you guessing about very important details.
