Flat Earth Society

It just sickens me that people actaully believe that crap. They make up their own physics without proof to.. ARGH!

Well, the famous quote by i dont remember who is right "the two most common things in the universe are hydrogen, and stupidity."

Ill just bask in the knowledge that im smarter than those people who think that:
The earth is flat
it is shaped like a pentagon
in the middle 5=6
all places named Springfield are connected through hypserspace
Idaho doesn't exist
there is atmosphere between the sun and here

and other garbage

Discuss.

Wow. Some people are really stupid. I bet the Flat Earth Society doesn't believe it because they're stupid, but because of some alterior reason us 'norms' wouldn't understand.

At first mention, I had never heard of them, and thought it was probably a joke. After a glance around one of their various web pages and seeing some of the rediculously stupid things therein, I'll lose a little faith in humanity if it's serious... Here's a few excerpts from the FAQ:

Frequently asked questions about the Flat Earth paradigm and related phenomena.
1. What is the Earth's shape?
The Earth is flat. It is shaped in the form of a pentagon, and thus has five corners.
4. What about the northern and southern hemisphere?
Globularist rot. This implies the Earth being a SPHERE, which it is not. The Earth has, however, an Inner and Outer Ring.
5. What is Platygæanism?
Platygæanism is the scientific hypothesis which holds that the Earth is flat or planar in topology.
6. How are continents located on the Flat Earth.
Generally, the "southernmost" continents are on the outside, whereas the "northern" ones are on the inside.
7. Does this mean that the Middle Corner is at the North Pole?
Not necessarily. It may be anywhere in the northern part of the Earth.
8. What is, then, at the south pole?
The Edge of the World. It is surrounded, at least in places, by a huge mountain range.
9. Where are the corners of the Earth?
Opinion is still divided on this issue. Conventional wisdom places the five corners at the following locations:
Corner 1: the northernmost extent of Lake Mikhayl in Tunguska, Siberia
Corner 2: Greenland or Iceland (Ultima Thule); though some researchers place it at Brimstone Head, on Fogo Island, Newfoundland, Canada.
Corner 3: Easter Island.
Corner 4: Uncertain; possibly Hokkaido (Japan), Lhasa (Nepal), or a desolate location in Outer Mongolia.
Corner 5: Somewhere near the south of Tasmania or New Zealand, though some researchers have suggested somewhere in the vicinity of the South Pacific island of Ponape.
13. What about gravity? Gravity is a lie invented by the purveyors of the inherently false spherical Earth theory. The theory of gravity has never been proven. There is no gravity, only inertia. The Earth moves through space like a giant elevator. We do not fall off because we are kept down by inertia. The Earth has inertia.
There is a school of thought which states, however, that the Earth does not move through space, but rather that it rests on the back of a giant turtle, and that what we call gravity is, in fact, the turtle's animal magnetism.
14. What about photographs of the Earth from the moon?
Most of these are fake. It is well known that the "moon landing" was faked. The film of what is claimed to be the moon was taken in the desert in the US state of Arizona.
There exist some genuine photographs from high altitudes, which appear to the untrained eye to show a spherical Earth. The reason for this effect is that the Earth's atmosphere becomes denser the further one ascends, after thinning out at about 5 miles. This causes light to be refracted more at high altitudes, giving the appearance of a spherical Earth.
16. Can ships be 'lost' at the edge of the Earth? Yes, at least in places where there are no mountains preventing this from occurring. The edge of the Earth is, in places a tremendous waterfall, and anything going over the edge will disappear into the aether. This can also happen to aircraft which fly off the edge.
17. If large amounts of water disappear off the edge, where does all the water come from? This is an argument for the theory that the Earth has a toroidal orbit. In a toroidal orbit, all the water which disappears off the edges falls back to Earth as rain when the Earth revolves about its orbit. This also means that the inhabitants of ships and aircraft lost in space will, in some occasions, return to Earth.
19. What is the "Springfield Effect"? The Springfield Effect is the name given to the phenomenon by which every place named Springfield is hard-linked in hyperspace to every other place of this name. In other words, there is only one place named Springfield, but it is "linked" to various locations in the world.
20. Does Idaho exist
No. The existence of Idaho is a lie, fabricated by a conspiracy of cartographers, as is England (see question 10).
21. What about North Dakota?
That doesn't exist either.
22. Any other places which are believed to exist but really don't?
Yes, Australia. And then there are the cryptogeographica, places such as Kadath, Carcosa, Hobbiton, Narnia, Hy-Brasil, Hell and such whose existence has not been satisfactorily proven.

FAQs?? Are these questions really asked that often?
Well, this is also one of the "FAQs":

"How long is the edge of the Earth?
The edge of the Earth is infinitely long."

Hmm...my understanding of infinity may be different than others, but wouldn't this make it a sphere? I guess it's all in perspective.
I like the Springfield effect...so is there a Main Street effect? There are a lot of those too...
Oh well, who are we to redicule? People can think up of theories all they want...this is rather extreme, though. Some seem to do it just to be different.
And for anyone living in Idaho and North Dakota...I am sad to tell you that you simply do not exist. So please stop posting, you're bothering the living.

Another FAQ should be: "WHAT???"

There is an Atmosphere between here and the sun. It just doesn't go all the way there.

Yeah.. they're short by about 92.9997 million miles

You're quoting Frank Zappa (replace universe with "world" and common with "universal" and I believe you've got the proper quote)

North Dakota, is just South Dakota with a different name - so of course it doesn't exist.

My God, how stupid can you be. Those FAQs are so dumb. All they say in each of them is mainly "blah blah blah...the Earth is flat, blah blah blah..." I guess these people don't believe in the pictures from space....oh wait I bet that doesn't exist either.

I think that gravity one is my favorite. The thing about the turtle's "animal magnetism" holding us down makes more sense than their inertia theory. I guess they missed that f=ma part of high school physics...

but of course high school physics (to them) is wrong, becasue it was taught by a corrupt government so that we would all wrongly believe that the earth is in fact a sphere!

edit: og yeah, i love how they try to prove one of their theories by saying that on a small scale (a few inches feet whatever) pi(which is a universal CONSTANT)=3.141592654.... BUT on the scale of the earth (casue its so much bigger) that pi=2.

2

2?

yes, 2.

I think it's actually pretty funny. It reminds me when my science teacher would tell us, that you can't prove anything. All you can do is gather alot of data that suggests this is the most probable way things work.

Flat Earth Society is basically science, except that they play by their own rules (hey things that were thought to been "proven" have been disproven in the past) And in the end, like anything else science is just one persons opinions against another's. Though some people's opinions are more backed up than others

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The Earth is like an elevator going up?!? hahahahha, bahahahahahahahah. That is why there is gravity? Because we are constantly accelerating upwards?
How do they explain what we see out in space, like other planets and stars? Are they flat too? Are they all just facing us because we're special?
If the south pole is the edge of the Earth, what about all of those explorers after Earnest Shackleton who crossed the south pole ?

animal magnetism? is this like how male and females (oposites) attract? is that animal magnetism? wtf is animal magnetism

you forgot: 11. Does this fit in with the Hollow Earth theory?
Yes. Beneath the Earth, or hanging off the edges, is a land populated by either green-skinned women or Nazis. All those claiming to have seen this have misinterpreted it to fit in with the spurious and false Spherical Earth theory.

dont do drugs, this is what happens.

GOD i wish i could talk to one of these people face to face.
