data loggers
like i have said before i am new to tuning modern engines and the dsm world, so data loggers just take readings from ure eco and store them so u can make adjustments, according to what it tells you, to the car when u go to tune correct?
so if i got that straight at what point in buliding my car up should i get one and what kinds would u suggest? thanks |

The best route is the DSM Link, it data logs and you can tune with it. Check out www.dsmlink.com the new version is coming out soon, if its not already out. You'll need somesort of datalogger/tuning device after any significant mods like, injectors, turning up the boost, etc.
I wish they'd come out with a 1G version, that thing is so pimp

DSMlink requires an EPROM ECU which is a PITA to find. Early 95s should have come with one though. A more common option for both 1g and 2g is an SAFC, Pocketlogger (or TMO logger which is popular in the 1g), and larger injectors. Done properly this can also take care of fuel cut. DSMlink is the best way to go though. But I did fine before it came along... I fint it most useful for cars with a 1gina2g swap...

Well said, but it is nice to have all those in one. A very nice package IMO. I have to find a place for my SAFC and lug around my laptop etc.

For those of us stuck with a 1G ECU , I guess the pocketlogger or TMO is the way to go. But I thought the S-AFC didn't have enough adjustment to go beyond a certain point? I recall 95GSXracer saying that a while back. So besides the AEM , whats my alternative? Can the TMO go beyond the S-AFC? or does it have that kind of adjustability or can it even do that.............
Sorry , when it gets beyond S-AFC territory , I get a bit confused.

The stock ECU is VERY good at what it does. Dave Bushur ran 7s on it. It makes adjustments at any rpm point, a couple hundred tiems a second. Based on rpm, load, airflow, intake temp, coolant temp, throttle position, knock sensor, baro pressure, etc. Wheres the problem with that? When using something like an AFC, you can only adjust every 1k rpm, true. But the unit use some algorithms to interpolate between those rpm points, same goes for TPS in between the hi and low TPS set points. So between that, and the fact that the ECU does constant adjustment and monitoring, its the same thing hte standalone does. If you need more fuel contorl than every 500 or 1k rpm incrememnts, you are over tuning anyway. Fuel tuning should be done on a load basis (almsot entirely derived from airflow and rpm), which the stock ECU already does. I could go on further, but I'm at work. Suffice it to say that the ECU is very good at wht it does. Only slight tweaking of a few parameters is needed, and DSMlink provides everything you need, and nothing more. No added complexity. Tuning with the AFC, MAF translator, VPC, emanage, etc are all hacks, since they change the airflow signal to the ECU causing all kinds of odd annomalies, bu it works well enough for 7s. Standalones are ok, but I prefer the stock ECU and maps, with some slight tweaking in DSMlink. Rockin, I think what you heard me say was about the range the AFC has. +- 50%. If you are using large injectors you use almsot all of it up. Lets say you have 660s, and you set everything to ~-35%. That leaves only 15% range left. You will likely be able to run about 5% lean on pump. SO that leaves only 10% now to lean out on race gas. Many people have gone faster on race gas by going to SMALLER injectors. If you are at the point where you have no chioce (my 660s are at 110% duty cycle for example) then VPC or the MAF translator will help get you some more range, but all at the expense of screwing up the airflow signal. DSmlink really is the way to go, since adjustments do not interfere with any sensor readings, and make changes to the actual internal maps.
