Nissan Skyline Vspec R34 GT-R (2001?)-Which is better- 2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R

First off im a big ol noob to this forum so please be nice, cuz im not sure if this message belongs in this forum, i think it would be in car comparisons but i couldent find it >_<...Im a bit of a car noob too...So i was wondering if you expertz could give me a bit of a awakening...

I was in my friends house and all of the sudden he sees me on a skyline website and says "Skylines suck as$"...I turned around and said "Sthu! I love skylines!" and he goes "The 2000 Mustang would whoop the sh** out of Your r34.....

And we argued for a long time About torque, Hp, all of these things...ALl i know is that 2000 Mustang Cobra R has more HP right? He says thats what makes it better then the skyline, but i dont think so...Will someone please enlighten me?

BTW, My dad owns this car, i dont know much about it...Only that Im gonna get it when i turn 16...Im 15 right now, and i cant wait! hes the real car expert ~_~.

Probably does belong in car comparisons, but anyway...

there's no one easy answer. Different cars are better at different things. I would be extraordinarily surprised for example if the Mustang could compete with the GTR in the handling department, or grip off the line. From a rolling start in a straight line I suppose the Mustang (if it really has substantially more torque, and weight isn't too much of a factor) might have the edge, but I bet braking and handling (which outside the US are actually seen as important ) would be way below the GTR's standard.

The only area a Mustang could beat a GTR mod for mod is on the strip, and even then its damn close. (What is the fastest stang drag time with a standard....ish engine?)

I think people are so biased to imports these days that they don't do their research. I personally favor imports myself, but I enjoy cars in general. However, the SVT Cobra R is one fucking tight ass car. See the stock specs. You decide.

Cobra R ($55,000)
385bhp @ 6250rpm
385lb-fft @ 4250rpm
0-60 4.5sec
1/4mile 12.9 sec @ 113mph
skidpad 1.01g (note: 2000 Porsche 911 GT3 .97g)

Skyline GTR R34 SPEC-V
Horsepower 277 bhp @ 6800 rpm
Torque 293 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm
0-60 5.2sec
1/4 mile 13.7 @ 103.5 mph
skidpad 0.89 g

The Cobra R is made for the Track, it doesn't even have a back seat, sound system, or A/C. 6-speed manual. Honestly, I would still take a skyline, because I don't like the reliability of american cars. I may be wrong but I am entitled to my opinion and choice. In summary, here is my call, if you took both off the Factory line brand new, broke them in properly, the Cobra R would OWN hands down, but on the other side the regular Cobra should stay at home. This is a race for the Big Boys. Oh and one more thing. If the skyline and Cobra R were tuned to the max... GTR would win, the cobra R is already a mustang tuned to the max, can't get much better than it is. The GTR is a beast ready to unleash.

a very big point to remember is that skidpag G's dont necessarily make for a good handling car, and therefore a quick car. doubtless many of you will disagree, but take a look at the lotus elan sprint for example, or a similar old sports car. they may not have high skidpad numbers but they are some of the best handling cars ever made.

I'll believe you when you tell me your fathers name, or at the least some details about the car. There arent many R34's in the US never mind Cali, be interesting to see which, if any you own.

Skylines are ugly as sin. There - I just needed to say that. Its been awhile since that quick shoebox has been the topic of a comparison around here.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...true usually we can agree on certain norms...like the Aztek being uglier than anything..etc...and that Ferrari's tend to be beautiful...

The Skyline is I think alot better looking than the Cobra R considering that the Cobra R is not much different than say a regular Mustang...has a bigger hood, an aeropackage, a big wing, wheels and side exhaust...nothing really special...anyways...in a comparison...the Cobra R came in last to the Viper ACR and Vette ZO6...so it's nothing out of this world...and for 55k...it's a rip...considering for 30-35k you can get the SVT Cobra w/395HP and kick it's butt!

The Cobra R would out handle the Skyline. It's one of the best handling american cars ever made. It's got a big ass n/a 5.4 liter modular.

The plain jane R34 GTR isn't that impressive when compared to a higher end performance enhanced SVT, yet take the N1 Nur spec. At just under 400hp real power not the claimed 280ps it would be comprable to what SVT has done to the mustang. Now the tables turn dramaticly. The Ford doesn't stand a chance in any catigory. You would need to compare apples to apples persay.

Hell my 11 year old R32 would shit all over a base model R34 and right now in straight line performance would still shit all over the Nur spec, yet it will out handle my car. Slap on the same suspension on my R32 and I would then just eat it for lunch.

Mod for mod there is still no way the SVT will compare until you get into full drag car specs, and I am talking all out trick suspension blower bla bla. If you are talking circut forget it. Without the restriction on the air intake the GTR's would be doing what they did 10 years ago in the Japan GT and that is purely dominate.

The mustang isn't a bad car at all! I wouldn't mind owning in fact, and I am not a ford fan, but I quite like the specs I've seen, not those listed here.

Until you guys drive on of these cars you will only be able to speculate. Yogs knows somewhat what a 4wd car can do coming through and out of a corner, but mind you the VR4 Mitzi's he owns have a different 4wd system. The GTR's do not understeer as bad as so many misinformed people think or claim. When you are not accelerating the car is in 2wd and thus acts like a 2wd with a slightly larger turning radius. Plant you foot and the fun begins.

Anyways going a bit off topic.

R34 base model < SVT
R34 N1 Nur spec > SVT
