The GM stock thermostat is designed to run at 195 degrees. I recently had a cooling system flush and fill and a thermstat replaced for about $175. After I got the car back the temp gage was running right about 220 (the ticket at the top is labeled 200, which is about where it was running before this service work) I was nervous took it back to the dealer after I had driven it around for 40 minutes. They used a temperature sensor and told me that the engine was running at the right temp but the guage on the dash was 15 degrees off towards the hot side. So... It is either a bad instrument cluster (the whole cluster is one piece, speedo, tach, etc) or bad sending unit. I chose not to find out and just keep an eye on it for consistancy. It is consistant.
