transmission problems

I bought a '91 Sentra with a worn c/v joint on the drives side (previous owner had the passenger side replaced) it poped when I turned and accelerated. I bought a Haynes manual and a new axle. When I put the axle in, I didn't get it seated right and it came out on the test drive. I reseated the axle and on test run2 had a vibration. then it "poped" and quit pulling. When it came out the first time, the speedometer would register like I was moving down the road. Now it doesn't register or try to pull at all. I checked the axle and it is still in. Anyone have any suggestions on a possible cause and fix?
