Seriously though, they are always really hard to get off. Do you have an air hammer? If you do, try that or a breaker bar. You can try using chemicals like liquid wrench to help you out a bit. Just keep trying, its a bitch but its gotta be done.

I have had to do this a million times. The best way is to have a pal hold the crank pully, take off the drivers side wheel and there is a small hole were you can put a wrench throught. Get and extension and a breaker bar and go at it. This should only take one rotation.
Also there is a special tool to hole the pully without maring it.

nobody ever takes my advice on this, but it is a foolproof way to take the crank pulley off and works like a charm.
BTW, this is to counteract the "stick a wrench in the crank pulley to keep it from turning" point of view, becuause i've seen about 4 honda crank pulleys bust from doing this. Okay, what i do is get a length of nylon rope. Clothesline rope works very good. Next, put the engine at #1 cylinder BDC, or close. Then, you want to take out the #1 spark plug. Now this is the part everybody scrutinizes me over, but what you will do is take the nylon rope and feed it through the spark plug hole and fill the entire cylinder up with rope. it will take a couple feet as the rope is soft and will smash. fill the cylinder all the way up with as much nylon rope as you can fit. then, just turn the crank pulley. the rope will compress and distribute even pressure against the piston, effectively making the engine not turn. I've done this on 2 or 3 hondas with no problems, and it is an old V8 trick used to mechanics for years with no problems. |

Ive never heard that before, its really creative. Next time I need to change a timing belt, water pump, or whatever, im gonna try that one.

I would rather break and replace the pully.
BTW, I hope you are using a REAL Harmonic Balancer. If you are stupid enough to use a solid crank pully, your engine is shot anyway.

If you dont have air tools, you can rent electric impacts that will spin the center bolt off easily. The initial impact of an impact gun can quite often break the bolt loose without spinning the crank. Electric impacts can be quite torquey and they dont require a compressor, they usually cost something like 30$ a day to rent. If that doesnt work, take one of these guys ideas (although Im not so sure about the rope idea). Also, even after the center bolt is off, the pulley may be stuck and you may need a three jaw to remove it.

i was gonna change my timing belt yesterday and came across the same problem!! i was trying for ages with an air gun, still didnt come off, i was raging!! one o the other mechanics gave me a hand to lock the pulley and hold it while i put a big pole over a breaker bar and hung on it!! still didnt bloody come off!
mite try that rope idea, sounds like it could be a winner

Be careful about putting too much awkward force onto the crank bolt. My friend snapped his bolt in half with the threaded part still inside. Good luck ever getting that out.
The hands down best way is an Impact Wrench. My 600ft-lb Craftsman took off the crank bolt in less than a second.

if u cant get it off with an impact, put more oil in the gun and turn up that compressor.
my impact suppose to run at 90psi but like when i had to take off my crank pulley and head bolts, i had that thing up to 120. |
