Cool Is speed too much for a teen?

Hey someone's told me in another thread that I should stick to getting something that's not too fast but that's really nice. Sine I'm only 16 and obviously not that experienced behind the wheel, I'm actually considering this because I dont want to end up in the hospital or morgue... cuz an accident can happen unbelievably easy and when you least expect it! I've always wanted to get something like a black 944 S with white racing stripes and a badass system... they're unbelievably cheap too! Maybe this would be more responsible of me? Need some input... thanks :smoker:

I agree that safety is incredibly important. Have you considered going to high performance driving school?

Also, you should be able to find some tracks in Florida, where you can drag and not worry about endangering anyone until you become more comfortable driving. I had a buddy who would drag his street car at a track. If I remember correctly, you had to sign up in advance, and there was a small track fee.

Yea drag racing is cool... but with the money I'd save I could get myself an old dirty-ass F-body or vette, drop in the biggest engine with the biggest cams and biggest carb I can find and go with that... Would a nice mint '87 944 S be a cool car to have for a 16 year old though? It's damn classy and I think it looks good... better than most crap at school if not the best.

I'm 18 now and got my first can when I turned 17. A '99 mazda miata, all i have to say is, I hated it. I wanted a RX-7 sooo bad I could taste it, no lie. At first I hated it and just beat the crap out of the car, and it took it, and rewared me for doing so. I began to love it and now I'm addicted to it. Anyway here is the point, The car came stock with about 105 hp at the rear wheels, over the past year I have upped that up about 130. And let me tell you I have fun with the car. I learned to drive it hard and fast, w/o it having massive Hp, so now i am taking the jump to major power, I plan on about 280rwhp after my turbo install. I guess what i am saying is, get a car that is fun to drive a rewarding to drive hard, I think that if i had got that RX-7, I would have gotten myself into some trouble becuase everybody would have expected me to drive it fast. With the miata there was no pressure at school to do burn outs or anything, it is a miata come on. Now they do though becuase I made it fast and noticable, and I did it when i knew I could handle it. Well I'm kinda tired so I hope this wasnt totally bullshit. But in the end, remember you can make any car fast in a straightline, just dont forget to think about the corners, that where you can get skrewed.:smoka: :smoka: :smoka: Hahaha I just read what i wrote, i swear I aint high!!

Guys I know it's hard not to try and look cool racing everywhere but please drive responsibably on the streets. There was a teen killed last week here in Toronto because some of his classmate were racing after school and one of them lost control and hit him from behind.

There are usually drag strips within a couple hours of most cities and even most states have at least one race track within driving range. Also I'll bet almost every city has at least some form or auto-crossing. You'll get way more enjoyment out of your car this way than being irresponsible on the street and potentially killing one of your friends, some innocent or even yourself.

It only takes a split second to fuck up your life. And yes it can happen to you, trust me. I thought the same thing when I was your age.

I agree that when you first get your license, you probably shouldn't be driving a ballsy car purely for the fact of not being able to phisically handle it. working up the ladder to a more powerful car is definetely the way to go. Also, when you do get that bad ass car, realize that people are expecting a show. it's alright to mess around a little bit, but i wouldn't make a daily habit out of it purely because of some of the risks. showing self restraint when you have a fast car actually impresses some people more than wailing on it. I've leaned all this shit firsthand. hell, i had to drive a lame ass clapped out minivan before i got behind the wheel of the Chevelle. even then, i had a few times when i first got the Chevelle when the the power almost got it out from under me because i wasn't used to so much torque matched with rear wheel drive. (thank god i didn't get it when i was inexperienced LOL.) but, like i say, nothing is cooler than cruising slowly by people in a ballsy car, because you have the power, you know you have the power, and so do they. you command a lot more respect that way. if you go blazing by people, their first reaction is gonna be "Man, what a needle dick." and that's just no good.

Yea I think a 944 would suit me better for now... they're fun to drive and have some of the best maneuverability in the world... I could learn to drive hard on it. If I ever want to go faster, I could pop in a 350 LT1 for about 3 grand for the kit and 2 grand for a low-miles engine off ebay. A few more modifications and I'd be set with a nice Por-Chev hehe

personally...
get what you want...
if you cant drive it, the car will let you know, and it will be harsh...
kinda like the kid that gets a bmw for his 16th and trashes cuz he's a badass.
if you drive it like you are capable of, any car is good.
if you are not capable of driving a car to its full potential, dont do it.
how hard is that?
for example...
if you buy an rx7, and know that it can easily oversteer and be thrown around a corner in the hands of a capable driver... and you cant drive it like that... dont drive it like that...
but by all means, get the car you want and learn how to drive it...
i reccomend a driving course, like the one at mid ohio por ejemplo...

but dont not get the car you want b/c you dont know how to drive it...
drive what you buy to your potential... one day your cars potential will be the same as yours.

Yea... well if I would get a 944, I'd drop in a 275hp LT1 engine later on when I could drive at its full potential. I'm also looking at maybe an 85 or 86 Porsche 928S. 284/288hp and they're pretty cheap too... If I ever wanted more power I could modify it and maybe throw in a nice turbocharger. I really want something cool that I could keep for my college years. I'm not too much into the RX7's rotary engine.

I don't know maybe its just me, im 17 and i drive more crazy in my silverado, than my vette, i guess its because i know that my vette is capable of high performances, and i dont have to prove to people that im faster than they are. Ive gotten 3 speeding tickets in my truck, and 0 in my vette, kinda weird hunh! But, I didnt get my vette above 70 the first month that i had it, i learned what its weaknesses and strengths were and i learned how to use them. Now i know at what speeds i can take people and what speeds to just wave and smile!

This is perfect, if you can afford it. They teach you to control the car, with all the hows and whys of what the car will do.

I'm dying to go to one. When I have kids, they're going to go...

Here's the high performance driving school I am planning on going to this summer:

http://www.midohioschool.com/index0504.html

It's about 45 minutes to an hour north of me.

If anyone here has attended this school, can you tell me about your experience with them?

Yes, this school is not cheap. But I consider going there a vacation. And like any vacation, you save and plan for it.

What course I take depends on how much I saved around after Spring of this year. I currently drive an un-modified VW Jetta, so I am definitely going to use of theirs.

Here are the classes I am thinking about taking:

* Acura High Performance
* Acura Advanced High Performance

Now, I will either take just the first one this year, or take both in their two day package.

I do know of another school that some of the folks here might like. This school offers a class on one lap driving and dragging.

Here's that information:

http://www.tracktime.com/school5.asp

There are alot of schools out there. I found a bunch while doing research. I definitely want to get into street racing. But being 25 and working alot of hours, I have to plan things out.

Here's the mechanic program I am doing starting this Spring:

http://www.cscc.edu/DOCS/AUTO/index.htm

I, unfortunately, didn't have money for this stuff growing up. I ended up getting a degree in Accounting and Finance, which took up all my time with a 40 hour a week job between 19-24. I spent the last year moving from Chicago to Columbus. And I spent most of my money just furnishing my apartment (yep, I know, I need a garage). And now I work as an analyst.

I hope that I might be able to eventually open up a high performance shop in Columbus. I have the business acumen. I just no nothing when it comes to doing car work.

Thanks,
