87 323 Engine Removal

I need advice on how to remove the engine from my 87 Mazda 323
Anyone out there done this? It is a manual 5 spd.

I am concerned about the clearance on the pass side.
The altenator and bracket has been removed but it appears
the water pump may be a problem when I go to pull the
engine away from the transmission. I thought perhaps I could
tilt the engine upwards as I am pulling it away to get a bit of
clearance but want to know for sure before I get into this.

Thanks for any advice.

Ken

I found the best way to remove the engine is to leave the tranny connected to the engine. leave the engine mount from the tranny on the cross member. Then just pull it straight out the top of the engine bay. You will have to jockey it a little bit to get the pulleys clear of the inner fender, and also remove the airbox mount plate. It might also be easier to remove the engine if you take out battery box too.

Engine removal

You don't need to take the transmission out. Yes, you can tilt the engine and it will slide out easily. There's enough space.

i reinstalled my 1.6 B6T from one GTX to another my bringing it out the bottom, thus allowing me to keep the differential, transaxle, and engine in one piece. i am not sure if without the diff it will be easier to pull it up, but i also didn't have a cherry picker or other pulley.
this required removal of the center brace (with a forward and rear engine moutn on my car) and the front swaybar. i just left the alternator, waterpump, power steering and most of the vacume lines and sensors/harness attached.
good luck with the project.
