Does anyone know if a special tool(s) is/are required to replace the fuel pressure regulator on a 99 Silverado? Also, for someone who has never replaced this particular part, how long should it take to do the job?
Thanks in advance. |

The fuel pressure regulator should be mounted on the left (drivers side) of the fuel rail.
Remove the engine cover. Remove the fuel pump relay and attampt to start the engine. (this will release the fuel pressure) The regulator is held in by a snap ring. The job shouldn't take more than an hour.

Why do you never have enough time or money to do the job right the first time, but enough time and money to do it again? I have a 98 5.7L Vortec in an FJ-40 Landcruiser and recently replaced the fuel pressure regulator. Can you tell me if there's a vacuum hose that attaches to the nozzle on the regulator? I don't remember seeing one when I removed the original, but I'm having gas vapor spew out of the exhaust which is making think that I missed something in installing the new regulator. Any help would be appreciated.

Mine was not all that easy to get at. We must be talking about two different injection systems. The SFI the FPR is under the manifold, If it's on the fuel rail, whats this TBI? MFI?....

Re: Removal of Fuel Pressure Regulator
Its not tbi. Tbi you need to take off the injectors to get at the regulator. Reminds me, i need one.

Re: Removal of Fuel Pressure Regulator
A 98 doesn't have a vacuum hose if its in the upper manifold

Re: Removal of Fuel Pressure Regulator
What would be the symptons be if you have a bad FPR, I have a 93 K1500 Sub that will idle fine and lope then lurch as if it gets a low pulse of fuel then increases as though it's trying to compensate for the low pulse, but at the same time also dies, Mind you this is only when the truck is in gear? Any one......Also I recenlty changed the fuel pump, Distributor, coil & IAV....

Could be the FPR, and it could be O2 sensors. Being a '93, I think you have an OBD-I system, and I'm not familiar if that can be hooked up and scanned to give you a code. A bad O2 sensor would definately throw a code though. Are you getting a check engine light? 3 other possibilities:
1. Bad fuel injector(s) 2. Vacuum leak (check by spraying quick bursts of carb cleaner in the engine compartment at the manifold and see if it evens out) 3. Bad enough exhaust leak |

Re: Removal of Fuel Pressure Regulator
No lights. Runs fine otherwise, no exhaust leaks I will try looking for a vacuum leak but doesnt sound like it has one, can here only buzzing from injectors.

I would definately do the Fuel Pressure Regulator then. From what I understand, it's pretty accessable in those models. I can't really help you as to exactly where it's at, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to take off the manifold. One last thing that I was thinking of: have you checked to see if all of you O2 sensors are screwed in tightly to the exhaust pipe(s)? If not, it can send a bad signal to your computer. Good luck.

Re: Removal of Fuel Pressure Regulator
I'll check the O2 sensors & wiring also and most pre-vortec engines the FPR is in the TBI unit they actually sell rebuild kits with all the springs, diaphrams & gaskets but will probably be better off just changing it out as a whole, Kinda tired of changin parts but gotta fix it right in order to sell it!
