Rover 214 speedometer / odometer

I just bought a 1995 Rover 214Si and realised only after I got it that the speedometer and odometer are not working. Is there anything I can do about this? Is it just a connection I can reconnect or does the whole unit have to be replaced?

Most likely the cable connecting it to the gearbox has broken or been disconnected - easy enough to fix. It's unlikely that the speedo unit is the problem, I'd say check that the cable is still attached in the engine bay.

If you're in the UK, note that a working speedo is a legal requirement.

I had suspected that the previous owner disconnected the cable to keep the mileage low, but have no idea where to look. I tried, unsuccessfully, to look under the bonnet. Is there any site I could check for a diagram of the engine bay and the location of the cable?

Thanks again!
