weird clicking noise coming from engine...
only seems to happen when taking off in 1st gear.... & it appears to be coming from the front near where it says "Toyota 3000" on the engine...
only noticed it coz I was standing outside the car whilst someone else was moving it |

well pop the hood while its running and rev the engine slowly. just quick burps of throttle to get the motor to rev from idle to 2500. if you hear it only while it is revving up but not when you keep it at a certain rpm. then its probably piston slap. if you can hear it when you very slowly rev it up a hundred rpm every two secs. then its prolly a rod bearing. but if you hear it all the time. even at idle then its just loud valves.

I think it must be piston slap then... is that difficult to get fixed?

well piston slap is when your piston pin seizes or stiffens up. to where the piston cant pivot back and forth easily so the sides of the piston slap the side of the cylinder wall. the only way you can fix this is to replace the piston that is making the noise. which means you have to tear down the engine to get the piston out and back in. if you have toyota or a mechanic do it your looking at a few thousand. but if you do it yourself its only prolly 600-900 for machining new bearings and gasket set. or you can just save up for a JDM motor for about 1000. and just drive on this motor til you do. its not terribly importnat unless you plan to fix it. then you need to do so asap. but if you are going to swap in a whole new motor then you can drive this for a while and eventually it will burn oil like crazy. so the choice is yours.

If you turn your steering wheel do you hear the noise? Or does it get louder? if so it could just be the engine mount.

actually that could be it, it mostly makes the noise when the wheel is turned to full lock... what do you mean by the engine mount anyway? can that be repaired?

Re: weird clicking noise coming from engine...
If you look on the drivers side below your intake manifold you will see a silver engine mount. Its might be that mount that needs to be replaced as its a common problem in the MKIV TT. I would just take it to the dealer and have them check out that mount, before they start ripping into other parts.
Good luck! Quote:

my supra is NA... does that mean there is less chance of the engine mount being the problem?
thx |
