starting in 2nd

We were stopped at a right light on our way home from a pool hall. I was in the mustang and my friend pulls in next to me in his civic. He rolls down the window and had this dum idea of racing starting in 2nd gear. I didn't want to misrepresent the mustang to I took the challenge. Light went green and I put it in 2nd, revving to about 6k and slowly letting out the clutch and revving more, crawled past him and beat him nevertheless. As I was driving down the freeway, a really bad smell started coming out of the engine, like something burnt, rubber maybe. I was wondering if anyone knows what it is. Is it bad for the engine to start in 2nd gear? I just hope i didn'y do any serious damage.

i couldn't tell you if it's bad for the engine or not.... i have launched in second in rain and such, i don't think it's bad... i think you rode the clutch to long or something... i have not had that problem(smell) after starting in second gear.... (have in first a couple times )

That smell is burning clutch.

Smells like shat don't it?



One time I started my old Civic in 5th gear from a standstill to see if I could, smelled like that for 2 weeks.

depends on how often you ride the clutch... actually, driving in general burns the damn clutch.... i couldn't tell ya if it's damaged... these people all know way more about cars than me i think...

Reving up to 6000rpm didnt help the clutch any... just pissed it off.

I would think it's still okay, just some premature wear. Does it still drive okay? Basically you put a couple hundred miles worth of wear on it in a few seconds.

Well, I didn't notice anything different while shifting on the way home. How can I tell when the clutch needs to be replaced and how much does it cost plus labor?

Yeah, its like when you wake up next to some fat cow you met at a bar the night before and apparently slept with... that right there takes a few years off of your life in seconds...

When your clutch starts to go bad, you'll feel it slipping when you give it full throttle. It will kinda feel like you're in neutral, but not really. Don't really know how to explain it, but you'll know what I'm talking about when it happens, and you'll know to get a new one in ASAP and be real easy on the one you have 'till you do. When it completely goes you won't be able to drive anywhere.

Price depends on where you live. I got my clutch disk alone for $120, and installation was another $150. Installation is a PITA, one of the few things I'll pay someone else to do.

yup, when your clutch starts to slip, when you give it full throttle, your rpm would flare up but then the car wouldn't really be moving. that is when your clutch has died. also you will notice that the clutchpedal will catch alittle bit higher then it normally would. delaysion, your soo lucky to be able to get a clutch job done for soo cheap. it would cost me aroudn 700 give or take to change my clutch. lets see $300 for a ACT racing six puck clutch, $75 for resurfacing fly wheel, and $300 for labor.
