First real model

Hi, I'm new here and I have only ever built a couple models in my life, never really finished one. I've been looking around this site and it looks like it could be fun...so I bought a '69 z28 RS (The same one primeraman did awhile back I guess) kit and some other stuff, but I had most of my other stuff that I needed from previous models. I am a beginner and don't really know how to do much, but I HAVE looked around at how-tos/FAQ. I have only just started this model and painted parts of the engine, and did th e chassis and some other stuff. This probably isn't making much sense because I suck at writing. I thought maybe I should start a thread so I could ask some quesitons about it as I go along? Well, here's what I've done so far

Engine block/tranny painted, cylinder heads painted and some chassis stuff done and painted

thanks, in primeraman's thread about the same kit as this, he said he had the engine wired. How do I do that? or get the materials?

I have another question that I might as well ask right now before I forget about it..Will normal masking tape work for masking off the chrome trim around the windows (and other parts too)? If not, what kind of tape should I be looking at to buy, where can I get it and what do the prices range in? When primeraman said he foiled the chrome, how do you do that? I know these are stupid questions, but I would appreciate if someone could answer them, since I would like to get into this if I like how this model turns out. Thanks in advance

First off I love the Nova in your signature! And your Camaro should come out great, what are you're plans for it?

1) To wire up an engine, you can go to any craft store or radio shack, and buy what ever size/color of wire you're looking for, then get a pin vise to drill the holes for the spark plugs in the appropriate location and connect them all to the distributor.

2) I've heard a lot of different tapes being used including Magic Scotch tape, but anyways you may use any tape that you like, just make sure to test it on scrap plastic to see if it'll damage paint surfaces or bleed. But I would say it's best to invest you're money into Tamiya products for masking tape which can be purchased at Hobby Link Japan and other internet stores, and if you're lucky even a hobby store near you! Also, if you don't want to do the trim painting, you could always replicate the way Yenko did it (look at your sig, there's no chrome trim around the windows.)

3) Foiling, you can use a product from Bare Metal Foil, or even Testors for that one. Check out Scale Dreams for some.

Remember, there are no stupid question about modeling... everyone is at a different level and is still learning so don't be afraid, we won't bite! I think...

Thanks for the help Honoturtle, I'm not sure what my plans are yet though. I was gonna lower the front but I am afraid of wrecking something so I don't think I will, probably just build it box stock. I want to make it red w/ white stripes with the front and rear spoiler and the grill with the 2 round headlights. 2 tone flat black/flat tan interior with some gloss black highlights maybe?

About wiring it..you said to pick up whatever size and color wiring I need...what size and color of wire should I use

Also, another question. When I paint the inside of the roof (ceiling I guess) of my Camaro, Is there a better way than masking off the whole car and spraying it? Thanks again

1)Just see how big the motor is and and see what colors you think would go good in there and buy what you need.


2)Just mask off the windows and then the spray won't get out.

ah never thought of that thanks And if I'm not incorrect I should apply that paint in light coats, to help prevent bleeding then as soon as I have my last coat on I take off the tape? Or do I wait untill it's dry to take it off. Thanks....again

Yes, light coats and you take the tape off after about 5 mins, don't let it totally dry, becuase then the tape will be stuck, but you can't have it too wet either.

ok, thank you. And when I attach the wires to the distributor, how do I do it? Do I need to drill 8 tiny holes (one in each one of those things that sticks up)? And if anyone knows a picture that shows the correct firing order of a 1969 Camaro 302 (something like this, except this is for an Olds 442 http://www.oldsmobility.com/images/firingorder.gif) I would appreciate seeing that

I wouldn't drill them. I have this little pokey tool thing. Its just like a screwdriver, but has a pointy tip. I just use those and poke little holes then just stick them in there.

For the pics, just look on google, there are tons there. I'm restoring this same model and I went there and found everything that I needed.

You go under the first one for Chevrolet, but I'm assuming that you're using the 302 c.i.d. motor.

Also, you can always paint the interior roof by just using a brush.
