'88 F250 rear axle hub races and seals
Replacing bearings, races, and oil seals. Using Timken parts. Seals have a 3-3/8" inside diameter and a 4-3/4" outside diameter. Have searched online and locally (Harbor Freight Tools, Snap-On, JC Whitney, Eastwood Company, etc.) for the proper Race and Seal Driver Kit, but haven't found anything larger than a 3-3/8" outside diameter. Chilton's manual recommends a seal driver such as T85T-1175-AH, but haven't had any success locating any such driver through an online search, either. I would like to obtain the proper tool for this job and know that I've done it correctly. Can anyone offer any information or advice that will help me get on with this task? I feel like this little guy right now.
Thanks for any helpful comments!!Bruce |

Howdy bforrest3,
The tool part number that you have is for the Ford seal driver kit. Ford will not sell it to the public and as far as I know no other tool companys can cross reference that number. I found this out 2 months ago when I replaced the seals on my truck. I would recommend for the races that you take your hubs and new races to ford and let them press it in for you, they will probably do it for a couple of dollars maybe even free. As for the seals, take and put a very thin layer of form a gasket on the outside of the seal. With the hub on your bench place the seal on top of the hub and get a piece of wood wider than the seal and put it on top of the seal. Get a hammer and lightly tap on all sides of the seal, watch it to make sure it doesn't go in crooked. Once the seal is flush with the hub your good to go. Or, while your at ford getting the races pressed in you can have the seals put in also. Hope this helps, Gr8ride

Howdy,
A little more info about your truck would be helpful, year, model, and how many miles it has. Do you hear any unusual rumbling coming from the back? Smell anything funny? How did you find out that it was hot? When was the last time the differential oil was checked? It sounds like you have wheel bearing going south on you. Gr8ride

might also be the brakes hanging up.
sometimes you can pound in a new race with the old one by tapping around the edge a little at a time. good luck |
