Question 1980 Covette / Hood will not open

I'm a new member and need your help quickly. Tried opening the hood today to check my oil and the other stuff. Pulled the hood release cable and only the left side (drivers side) released. What can i do to release the right side (pass side).

Thanks for your help!

Are you sure you pulled it all the way back? What happens to me on my '79 is that I pull the release until it clicks, and sometimes both release but sometimes only the left side releases. I then have to pull it harder until there is a second click and the right releases. It just started doing this out of the blue a few months after I restored it, so it may be the same situation on yours.

I know C-3s and C-4s are totally different, but I had the same problem w/mine. I actually posted here for help but had no response.
My driver's side popped but the right side didn't. I hooked the cables behind the lever w/my finger and could feel that one cable had no tension.
I ended up removing part of the inner fender well to gain access to the latch. It wasn't easy, but I managed to snake my arm up and around to (barely) flip the release lever w/my finger. I could feel where the cable mounted to the release bracket and just felt around 'till I found it.

Good luck,

Re: 1980 Covette / Hood will not open

There is an aftermarket tool to release the hood for certain year corvettes . You can find it in some corvette accessory books. It is a rod that you pass through the hood by route of the door opening and twist to release the latch.

hood stuck 1980 vette

My hood is stuck on my 1980 Vette. The hood release only releases the driver side latch. Has anyone figured out any way to get the hood open besides removing the right tire well housing, and fishing up to the latch???

Re: 1980 Covette / Hood will not open

Grab the exposed cable on the drivers side with pliers, and pull.

Jack the car up on the side that won't release. Put some wood blocks or jack stands under the frame so the vehicle won't crush you to death if the jack fails. With a bent rod, you will have to hook the release cable to the lock on that side of the engine compartment and pull hard. Or maybe you can reach up real high and snag the cable by hand. Car thieves don't seem to have any problem doing that.

Re: 1980 Covette / Hood will not open

I agree with cw823, the easy fix from the driver's side is to grab the exposed hood latch cable with a pair of pliers and pull. If all else fails, go to the fire wall and push out the rubber plug on either side with your fingers. From the driver's side you will need an 8 inch extension, then push down on the hood latch mechanism to free the latch. From the passenger side no tools are required. Use your finger to find and press the hood latch mechism directly in line with the plug hole.

Re: 1980 Covette / Hood will not open

your release cable is out of adjustment. i ran into this problem several times as a corvette technision, we didnt use a special tool, we used a coathanger. and tripped the hood release latches by way of the windsheild gap on the hood. it will help if someone can post pictures of the latches in question so you can see what your supposed to trip its a bit hard to do if your not sure how it works exactly.
