Question

for those of you who have exhaust on your car already, i have a question. i am supposed to recieve my apex-i n1 today(i hope) and want to know if there is any kind of breaking in i have to do or anything. i know that the sound from the exhaust will change, but will i have to do anything else?

when we first installed it and started the engine, my cousin said it will smell bad because of our finger prints and dust on the piping will burn from the exhaust getting hot. i don't know if he was just making it up or what, but it did smell bad. not anymore though, lol.

it fine when install mine it shot out black stuff when i started the car and smelled like burning but it was because i forgot to peel off the part# sticker before installing =P so it smelled for few miles til it all burned up
also the black stuff might be from if you had it welded the crap that gets in the pipe it'll go away tho

you are always burning things in the exhaust, so the black residue is gonna be there all the time... at least on every honda i have seen... it is a carbon mixture from the burnt molecules coming out the exhaust and cat... so it isnt bad... and it is possible that when you revved it and got the black smoke, it was b/c it hadnt been revved that high for a while... revving high dislodges carbon in the motor, clearing everything out...
not like you dont rev your car, but the first time you do usually gives that smoke... no biggie.

so even if it continues, which i really have no idea if it is, i shouldn't worry about it? A lot of people are telling me that it is because when i rev hard in vtec it's running real rich and the apex was designed with a sort of free flow with no blocking like the stock exhaust. it's cool now, at least i understand it a little better. thanks

what you said explains it if you run rich in vtec.
b/c when you run rich there is fuel that is unburnt that enters the exhaust system. that leads to secondary burnoff, which is normal, but it leads to the black stuff. i know all about it, b/c my car was runnin way rich for a while, and i had to clean off the WHOLE back of the car w/ simple green. twice. everytime i washed it. it got everywhere. but it shouldnt do that on your car. unless your air fuel mixture is fukked, like mine was. but you'd know if it was cuz it would run shitty. so i think you r just gonna have to clean it and smile when you hit the vtec, man. later.
