Maintenance 2002 Z28 35th Ann.
Does anyone know a good reference website for the LS1 motor. I need to do some maintenance but I don't want to just start tearing into the motor until I do some reading.

Reset the system.

Your vehicle has a computer system that lets you know when to change the engine oil and filter. This is based on engine revolutions and engine temperature and not on mileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change will be indicated can vary considerably. For the oil life system to work properly, you must reset the system every time the oil is changed.

When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL message in the Driver Information Center (DIC) will come on. Change your oil as soon as possible within the next two times you stop for fuel. It is possible that, if you are driving under the best conditions, the oil life system may not indicate that an oil change is necessary for over a year. However, your engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and at this time the system must be reset. It is also important to check your oil regularly and keep it at the proper level.

If the system is ever reset accidentally, you must change you oil at 5,000 km (3,000 mi) since your last oil change. Remember to reset the oil life system whenever the oil is changed. I don't have any info on locking spark plugs. Here's GM procedure, this has the gap and tourqe specs for you. Spark Plug Replacement Removal Procedure Remove the spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement . Loosen each spark plug 1 or 2 turns. Use a brush, or use compressed air in order to remove any dirt from the spark plugs. Remove the spark plugs one at a time and place each plug in a tray marked with the corresponding cylinder numbers. Installation Procedure Inspect each spark plug gap. Adjust each plug as needed. Specification Spark plug gap: 1.524 mm (0.060 in). Hand start the spark plugs in the corresponding cylinders. Notice Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems. Tighten the spark plugs. Tighten Tighten the 5.7 L engine spark plug on a NEW cylinder head to 20 N·m (15 lb ft). Tighten the 5.7 L engine spark plug on subsequent installations to 15 N·m (11 lb ft). Install the spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spark Plug Wire Replacement Removal Procedure Disconnect the spark plug wire at each spark plug. Twist each spark plug 1/2 turn. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from each spark plug. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the ignition coil. Twist each spark plug boot 1/2 turn. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wires from the ignition coil. Installation Procedure Install the spark plug wires at the ignition coil. Install the spark plug wire to each spark plug. Inspect the wires for proper installation: Push sideways on each boot in order to inspect the seating. Reinstall any loose boot. |
