Unhappy gear ratios ?

hey, first off, i think this place kiks ass!!! its bad as hell!!!! and second off does anyone know bout gear ratios ? like 3:8.4, or whatever the hell it is...i am just really eager and curious to know what all of them mean and what the are, how you tune them or what !!!! THANKS a bunch for the help

Gear ratios are the differences between the number of teeth when two or more gears are meshed. If you have a gear with 100 teeth driving a gear with 50, then the gear ratio is 1:2 because for every 1 revolution the 100 tooth driving gear makes, the 50 tooth driven gear makes 2 revolutions. In a differential, you've heard about ratios like 3.84, what this means is that for every 1 revolution of the driveshaft, the wheels turn 1/3.84th of a revolution. So the higher the number, the slower the wheels turn with every revolution of the driveshaft. The advantage of higher ratios is the mechanical advantage is increased. Since a wheel is a lever, its like using a crowbar to open a beer bottle top instead of a bottle opener. Same thing with transmissions, different ratios are used because the engine cannot spin fast enough to move the car along at 60mph without some gear reduction. The transmission's ratios juggle between horsepower and torque. 6th gear will move very quickly, but without a great deal of torque while 1st will move the car slowly with a great deal of torque to move the car from a standing start.

great info enginerd, but you I don't agree with your last statement. It should be: From a standing start, 1st gear will accelerate a car quickly without a great deal of torque, while 6th will accelerate the car slowly even with a great deal of torque from a standing start.

Sorry, to clarify, I should have said velocity or speed. First gear offers fast acceleration but a low speed. Sometimes my classes hurt my brain
