I need some opinions about an upcoming project.

I've had one of the Monogram 1/12 '57 Chevys waiting in the wings for a long time to do a Fireball Roberts car like the 1/25 I've got but a full tilt detail job. I can't seem to find the right (read that correct) reference material to use and there's more scratchbuilding to get parts for a dirt latemodel sportsman car than I want to do so it has remained stalled.

I just got the idea today to do a fully detailed whiskey tanker out of this instead. The only holdup is that I'm not that comfortable with a Bel Air Sport Coupe. I know the Mitchum car was a club sedan Fairlane 500 so I may just put a plain painted panel in the rear flash and make it a 210 hardtop.

The size lends itself to all sorts of details that couldn't be incorporated, or even seen, on a 1/25 build. I'm thinking everything from the "no brainer" whiskey tank to little touches like a smoker valve, oil spray and other little goodies like that.

I'm looking for opinions and ideas about the build whichever way I decide to go. This could just be what I need to break out of my slump. Let's hear it guys, whadda ya'think?

A Whiskey Tanker is a car used to run moonshine (Everclear?) from one place to another. The cars need to be High-Performance and basically, These are the types of cars NASCAR is based on ( to make a long story short). I would love to see the detail you could squeeze into it! I'm sure there's something out there to help with the conversion!

That would be so awesome. I don't think I've ever seen a car built that way, now I want to do one! Are you going to open the trunk so you can show off the tank in the back? That's what I'd do in 1/24... That's about all I could do, really. And a hasty, not very shiny paint job, and perhaps some overspray on the tires like in Thunder Road...

Anywho, awesome idea! Keep on truckin', dude!

I guess that I'm just too young to know this stuff. Sounds pretty cool though.

I vote that it should have at least one body panel missing or at least unrecognizeable.

As evidenced by the little green face above, any body damage or especially missing panels would make it too conspicuous. LOL The very nature of the "tanker" rendered it one of, if not the first street "sleepers". That's 50's speak for a "Stealth" ride. It had to be nondescript in both attitude and appearance to not draw unwanted attention to itsself while on it's appointed rounds. It also had to have massive amounts of GO under the skin in case the gendarmes tumbled to the real nature of the beast. Kind of like Bruce Banner?/the Hulk. Here's my '64 before the re-paint with a couple of friends taking care of "pressing" business, LOL.
