Car wont run past 3k RPM!

Hi,

I finally got my car to run and drove it.
Everything seemed fine until I put it in 1st gear and drove.
Once I went exactly past 3000 RPM and didnt shift b4 that the car will make very bad sounds and slow the engine down a little so u have to let off the gas or put it in Neutral.
But as long as u shift B4 3000 RPM each time it shift very smoothly.
Also, my check engine light is on and it never came on B4.
Thanks

Check the ECU for codes. Lift passenger side carpet & turn ignition on then count flashes = code#

ill check the ECU codes tommorow cause its pretty late now.
But u think it could be a bad distributor?
I just used it awhile ago and this problem never occured until now.
I did take a D16 dizzy cap and put it on the D15 one.
Is there a way to test if its a bad dizzy?
Thanks

In my old stock motor thats what happened to me. I changed the coil and it ran find but then it died a week later. Ended up getting a new distributor.
