Where to get speed sensor plastic gear?
Does anyone know where to locate the plastic gear that goes on the end of the speed sensor unit with a 1984 manual transmission?
I purchased a replacement speed sensor to fix a problem with the previous one which snapped and lost it's plastic gear, but the replacement did not come with such a gear. |

You will need to get it from a gm dealer. Make sure you count the number of teeth on it and also tell them what color the gear is. There are 4 possible gears. 29 teeth Red gear GM part number 10041031 30 teeth Purple gear 10041032 30 teeth Blue gear 25519845 31 teeth white gear 25519846 Good luck |

Working the Parts counter at a GM Dealer for the last 15 years if you come to me and want a speedo gear and don't know the color, I am going to ask for the Final Drive Gear Ratio, tire size, and Trans type. There are no RPO codes in the GM EPCs that tell me what gear you have for any GM vehicle. They are listed by Gear Ratio, Tire size, and Trans type. The part numbers I came up with are directly from our GM EPC, if memory serves me, the 10041032 has been discontinued. |

Alright, so I have the proper gear, but I have a question about installation: Does the thing merely slide onto the speed sensor, which is then merely inserted and bolted into the transmission?
I ask because while the gear won't fall off if I hold it upside down or even shake it, it just seems, well, just loose enough that I worry about it being inside a transmission. |

I thinki mine broke off in the tranny how can I get it out. Will it just shred, is that why they are plastic?

Re: Where to get speed sensor plastic gear?
they are plastic because they want that piece to wear first...rather than the gears inside your transmission. This gear is easier and cheaper to replace than anything inside the tranny. You should never leave foreign objects inside your engine or transmission, no matter what they are made of!

It is not my intention to leave a foreign object in my tranny but I also do not want to drop the cradle to open up my tranny nor do I have the time or help. My brother in law is the ine who directs the cradle dropping sine he has done it a million times. I have attempted once on my 85 and fucked some shit up, then we did it again on my 86 abd shit when very smooth. It is not doing anything yet. I still have the tranny from my 85gt so if this one goes it goes. I talked to a technician at pontiac and gm they both said that the worsr case scenerio would be my gear getting shredded by the metal ones. i am just worried about the shaft that broke off in it also, so I drive way slower and less often.
