Dont worry about the power per dollar ratio of a port and polish job. Especially on your car, the LT1 is halfway under the firewall. Which means lots of labor costs to get the heads off. Just spend your time and money on things like exhaust and bolt-on goodies. You wont see that huge of a gain in power for the cost it would take for hte port and polish. ..... Unless you're going for absolute power then by all means.

Stick with the cold air kit and cat back exhaust route and possibly gears. If you're goal is better 1/4 or 0-60 times, these mods will help for relatively low cost. Good luck.

It'd waste a lot of your money.
There's a whole artical in Car Craft for the month of July on tuning up an lt1. Check that out if you can. Or,, I could scan the pages and send em to you. Get back to us though on what you do |

Porting your heads really depends on what you have planned for your car. I agree with everyone else and would start with the bolt-on's like a cat back, drop in a cold air intake, maybe consider a beefier cam. For the money gears can sometimes be the best bang for the buck improvement.
Cheque the options sticker inside your glove box for one of these codes to see what gears you're running: GM1 = 2.59 GU2 = 2.73 GW9 = 2.93 G44 = 3.07 GU4 = 3.08 GU5 = 3.23 GU6 = 3.42 GM3 = 3.45 If they're really tall(numerically lower) then a switch to 3.73's would probably make you think you bought a new motor! |

i have the GU5 gear which you say is the 3.23 gear ratio, so if i did get a new gear what would you recommend the 3.73 or the 4.10-4.11, and i will also be adding some peformance parts such as vor-tech supercharger new performance heads& Cam package, tires etc. Would i still be able to run the qaurter with 4.10-4.11 or have to get the 3.73 gear????
and i have another ? about the 93 z28 computer , is the hypertech chip basically the only thing i can get for it, b/c i no i cant get the hypertech programmer III , b/c there only for the 2000 and up , which i have heard..... but basically i just want to no if i should or need to improve the computer to my car when i put upgrades on it!!!!!!!!!! |

Hypertech is garbage.
When you do a few mods get a fastchip from www.fastchip.com If you're auto, go with 3.73 gears, if you're manual, go with 4.11s

Gripenfelter is right - you really can't go more than 3.73's with a 4-speed auto.
As for computer tweaking, you would definitely need to get the PCM recalibrated from the shorter gears. www.psmforless.com is a place that will write a map for you based on your whatever mods you have. Buddy mentioned another site for you to check out as well. If you're going to get a shop to install most of these mods for you, I"d recommend you take it to a place that can custom tune/dyno your car on the spot. Most places that really know what they're doing will do this for you. Theres a shop called Rolling Thunderz up her that I'm going to hit up over the winter and in spring to finally get my heads ported, LT4 intake ported to match heads and a 58mm BBK throttle body, 3.73 gears swap, new posi Auburn differential, bigger injectors, fuel pump & regulator. A major part of the work these guys will do is going to tune my PCM - one of the dudes is going to sit in shotgun with a laptop plugged into my car and ride along with me, recording how my car reacts at idle, slow starts, full throttle, etc... then back to the shop to hit the dyno. You can actually do all of this yourself if you get the the DFI fuel injection setup from Accel (I wouldn't have the patience, know how, or even time to screw around with that myself!). |

You would get a few more ponies but the hp per dollar is not good compared to alot of other bolt on mods you can do

Take your top speed and multiply it by whatever size rear end you've got now, then divide it by 3.73.
