Unhappy eating oil

My 2003 996 CAB, has 6500 miles, and eats a quart of oil every 400 to 500 miles. In the past 1700 miles, the dealer topped off the oil and I ran the car dry (in the dipstick). I broke the engine in correctly, by the way.

The dealer is offering an engine replacement. Should I take it or push under the lemon law. Will a new engine devalue the car or make the car run like crud since it won't be factory installed?

All comments are appreciated.

Marty

Oil Use

My 2002 996 uses about a quart every 600-700 miles. I am told that at leaast part of the problem is that the engines cylinders are horizontal and the oil collects along the bottom where it can leak through the ring gap's and be burned next time you fire the engine up. Turbo's are reportedly worse. Having said that, I don't know if I believe any of it but that is the story from my dealer.

Re: eating oil

I recently had to put one litre of oil in my 996 Turbo. I had travelled just under 4,000kms since buying the car second hand. The car had previously travelled 9,000kms. I was also told by my dealer in Germany that this is normal for a Turbo.

That can't be true because Porsche has been using flat engines from day one. Even the classic Beetle! and they don't lose oil every 500 miles. He's telling you a whopper, order him to replace the engine!

Re: eating oil

hello. oil consumption is normal on 993, 996, 986, and 996t engines. if the car sits a lot you will be experiencing white smoke upon startup as the oil will leak past the piston rings from sitting. this is normal. if your driving and shut the engine off and start it up a few hours later you should not see white smoke out the tail pipe. that is not normal. i have seen many issues with the oil seperator causing excessive oil being burned into the engine. have your dealer check the oil seperator if you have oil burning too frequently at startup or while driving. at our dealer we recommend oil changes every 7500 miles and i have seen many engines with ~2qts low. this is normal due to the nature of the flat six. you have to remember these engines hold 10qts of synthetic oil for this reason.
