My '95 tranny needs help

My 1995 Ford Escort LX has something wrong with the transmission. The symptoms : when it tries to shift into next gear, it apparently slips into neutral. Once it finally GOES into gear, it works great. This is an intermitten problem however, it appears to be coming more frequently. I'm wondering if this could be a sensor or is the tranny done. We have 122,000 miles on it and other than that, the car runs like a dream!!

I have a 94 escort wagon with an over drive transmission. It is doing what you describe but it is not really intermitant. I spoke to the transmisson repair shop about it and he said that if is not happening all the time that it soon will be. I am now looking for a used trany to replace it with.

Do you know if there are regular 3 speed transmissons that would bolt right up to where and over drive trany was? How many different automatic trannys are there for a 94 LX wagon?
