Only if it's not cranking the engine fast enough.
He could not be getting fuel, possibly a bad fuel pump. What knid of fuel injection does this car have? Multi port or TBI?

It is quite possible that you may have a problem with the coolant sensor. These import engines have tempermental coolant sensors. However you need to scan the system to verify the problem. Any way the sensor is not very expensive. I'd throw one in and keep my fingers crossed. Do not flood the engine by cranking it continually. Good luck.

Going by this post, have you made sure that the timing is correct? Meaning: be sure that the distributer is not 180 degrees out of time, has the distributer ever been removed? Timing belt replaced recently? This could be a timing issue, you don't say what type of engine you have, I have a 1987 Dodge Colt Vista, the belt was so worn that it jumped a couple of "cogs" of the belt and the timing was off enough so as not to be able to start it, it would fire once in awhile or try to start but never would.
Had to install a new timing belt, I put in the whole kit on my 2.0L, main belt, balancer belt and tensioner pulleys. I'm not saying that this is your trouble but it sure sounds like what my colt did to me.

You can remove the plastic covers that protect the belts and have a look at them, your engine might use a chain, not a belt, goodluck to ya
