1986 Daytona Turbo Z
Hiya, got a few questions for everyone. I'm being offered a 86 turbo z daytona with 158k miles on it with a new turbo, rebuilt engine, and a new tranny. Power everything with a slick turbo boost gauge. I have a few questions. Is this a rare car? it's black with gold tags and rims. Is it quick? I've searched around for stock 1/4 mile times and haven't found any. Is $1500.00 too much for this car? it looks great with no rust.
Can I make this car fast? 13s, 14s a possibility? Thanks and let me know!!! I don't think it has the C/S package. The engine didn't have specific insignia on it, and if it was on the inside, then I could take a better look. But i kinda doubt it. thx again |

....I had one of these. 11 lbs of boost a good thing? Yes! in an automatic? Not sure since mine was a 5 speed, but let me tell you, I wasn't afraid to go Mustang hunting one bit. Slower than some, faster than most. Price is good, but the 5 speed would be MUCH better.....

Your car is equipped with the early Turbo I. It is a 2.2L I4 SOHC pushing about 146HP. And your turbo is pushing about 10PSI max. Your car also came with the A-413 automatic. From 1984 - 1986 these were very weak transaxles and should be avoided. If you buy a car with one of these swap in another transaxle and half shafts.
You won't be able to make a lot of power with this engine and drivetrain. $1,500 is too much for this car and I would pass it up unless you plan on swapping all the underhood goodies from another car. If you plan to have it as a daily driver then it will be just fine, but $1,500 is still asking too much for an 86. |

I suggest you find a manual car, a manual would be worth 1200. Auto would only be worth not even 1K.
A stock turbo 1 should run low 16 or high 15's in the quarter. I would suggest you save up and buy a turbo 2 though, they have 174 HP and run low 15's stock. And they also have MUCH stronger components like the transaxle is way better and it is also intercooled from the factory. Find one from 87-89, I have an 87 T1. Don't bother with anything 86 or older. To make a 87 T1 do 14's, you would need:2.5'' exhaust, and the MOPAR upgrade ECU. Thats it! To do 13's you would need a 3'' exhaust, a turbo 2 swap(intercooler and different intake manifold), and the MOPAR ECU upgrade to 14 PSI boost. But doing 13's is pushing it on the stock T1 engine. The T2 was also stronger internals, they can probably do 12's on the stock components. Plus 87-89 T1's have the A520 transaxle which is a little stronger than the 86-older A 525. |

I can attest to the durability of the 5 speeds that were in my Daytonas. Had a run-of-the-mill '85 with the turbo and manual tranny (about 7 lbs of boost) and the '86 Turbo Z (with about 11 lbs of boost) My ex-wife (just plain wife at the time) shat out the spider gears faster than I could fix and repair in the '85 before she finally totalled out the car, and after she only once trashed the tranny in the '86, I figured she didn't need 11 lbs of boost when she could wreck 'em with 7. I swapped in the computer module from the '85 into the '86, so now it stayed down at 7 lbs of boost. A month later, here's the conversation that took place.....
Her: "I think somethings wrong with the car" Me: "Why's that?" Her: "It seems like it isn't as powerful as it was when we first got it" Me: "That's cause you're just USED to it. If I had a Hemi Cuda I would be ecstatic with its power for about 2 months. After I got used to all that, it wouldn't seem like such a handful anymore." Her: "Aaahh...." Good thing she never paid attention to the boost gauge.....I just wish I could've figured out a way to secretly toggle between BOTH modules so when I was driving: big boost.

Like I said, the 86-older Daytonas had the A525 tranny which wasn't as strong as the 87-89 A520.

A word on transaxles.
If you find a car with a true Turbo II or Turbo IV (VNT) Then you have one of the best FWD transaxles built. I am talking about the A-555 (Turbo II) and the A-568 (Turbo IV/VNT). Both transaxles were disigned by Chrysler and built by Getrag of Germany. They are forged racing five speed transaxles. They both can take whatever the engine could throw at them. It is the half shafts you have to watch out for. The cost of a new A-568 is about $4,300 and not much less for an A-555. Finding a car one of these is your best bet. |

Re: 1986 Daytona Turbo Z
I think if you just build up the tranny you could have a cool car that's easy to drive in heavy traffic. True it's better for performance to have a manual but oh well. The auto keeps it unique.
Hey i just joined , not sure if i'm doin this right could you or some one else email me back just so i know this is working- thanks. |
