5 series auto box / idle possible fault?

A couple of times now my '96 528 auto has surged forwards whilst I've been sitting in 'drive' mode. By this I mean I've been literally creeping forwards without need to use the gas peddle in first gear when the car has rev'd up without my doing an dsurged forwards.

The first occasion I was in the garage, and managed to stamp on the brake, the second was a litle more serious when I was in a car park and managed to ram it into the bollard in front of me!

Before you think I'm some crazy fool getting my brake mixed up with my accelerator, I'm not! It's happened to my mate who was driving the car too.

Any ideas or help on what's the score hear? Is this a common thing, easily fixed? Any help would be great. Cheers.
