205 1.6/1.9 Gti

wow
i really cant believe nothing has been posted about this truly great car. The 205 Gti is one of the greatest hot-hatches ever, a true drivers' car: light, great handling & steering, the 1.9 is genuinely fast and both are awesomely entertaining. lift-off oversteer was very much the order of the day, so be warned, especially on a wet roundabout.
my friend had two of these babies, one convertible (Cti) and they really went.

Here's a late 205 1.9 Gti

cheers,
jay

do ya know any1 with a 1.9 transplant? 205's can look sh*te if over done but tasteful mods really set it off dont they?

i think it looks great in original guise, the later models especially.. nice chunky alloys on the 1.9 too... as for mods im not against them as long as theyre not carried out by the max power brigade!!

i see you have a 106GTi.. great little car.. sort of a spiritual successor to the 205Gti, no?

cheers

yeah very much a successor to the 205 gti... the plus point is that its even quicker - 0-60 in 7.4 seconds!! great handling too, well recommended!

i would love one but couldnt afford the insurance.. im driving a 1.6 golf at the moment; no grunt, rolls like a boat, feels flabby.... a nimble Gti would do me just fine!! i would love to have an Integrale if i could somehow raise the £££££ for the insurance.. dont see it happening though

cheers

AFAIK, the 205 CTI has been around in the Netherlands with a 1.9 engine, albeit with 105 HP, the same engine as in the Gentry.

And a 106 GTI from 0-60 in 7.4 seconds??? In my experience times like that are the exclusive domain of the 309 GTI-16......

Cheers,
Erik.

yeah, the 106 Gti is quoted as having a 7.4s sprint to 60. 309 only manages 8.3 according to evo mag?

No no no no!!!!!!! Maybe you're right if you're referring to the standard 309 GTI, the 8v job with 122hp, but I mean the 16v version with 160 hp (without catalyzer). This one was rated from 0-100km/h in 7.7 sec. The Dutch Autovisie magazine timed the car from 0-100km/h in 7.2 seconds.
BTW 0-100km/h is the same as 0-62.5mph. A small difference but it could mean that the 309GTI-16 might even be a tenth of a second quicker from 0-60 mph than from 0-100km/h....

Cheers,
Erik.

PS the 106GTI IS a very fast one!! At the time that I still had my 309GT-16 I encountered one and had my hands full. But still, the roadgoing shoebox IS somewhat quicker...

Au revoir,
