Valve Cover Breather

Does it do anything or is it just for looks?

Breathers are not for looks, but some people think they cool if they have them on BONE STOCK engine. Normally a hose connects to valve cover & intake. This way the engine sucks all that crap in & hopefully re-burns it. Back in the day there was no breather, just a hose that pissed oil down on the road surface.

So if there's a breather and no hose, is that harmful to the engine? I have a breather on mine... just wondering if I should switch it back to having a hose, or not worry about it.

Keep the breather on keeps it from sucking in the oil and causing sludge....I would cover the hose attachment for the intake ither tape or another breather what have you.....

Performance wise its better to have the breather. Since the engine does not burn oil/sludges as well as it does gasoline. Valve adjustment should be done every 15K so clean off any crap while the valve cover is off. In some states breathers like we are talking about are not emission legal.

If you look close I have a bolt screwed into where the hose attachment should go.

It's an oversized prelude intake a friend gave me for free, cut short to fit on my engine and I bought a matching K&N.

A gain from a breather is probably too minimal to put on. After some time you'll probably see a bunch of grease all over and around it. I wouldn't recomend it.
