I need some help diagnosing a problem with my brakes / front axle...
There's a scraping noise whenever i brake below 20mph or if i accelerate up to 20 mph, a squeaking / sqealing noise outside the car when I turn left... A friend says I may have a torn boot and that the lube is dry, or possibly the pads on my breaks are bad or unevenly worn... anyone know of a good Olds' website that has a how - to on taking off the wheel, brakes, etc... home repair type stuff? Thanks

Try jacking your car up and spinning the wheel by hand. Often times you can figure out if its a brake problem or a driveline problem by close inspection. Also, take the wheel off and check the gap betwene the brake pad and rotor.

While i check that...
While i'm out checking that... i've noticed another thing while i drive, that the noise increases when i brake or shift the weight to the front, and decreases when I shift it to the back, after accelerating a little harder...

If thats the case then its probably not driveline. Maybe brakes, maybe wheel bearings or CV joints.

Found the problem
Okay, I found the problem... looks like a caliper was stuck on the inside of my passenger side brake disk and now the disk is gone, making the scraping noise....
All i need now (after i buy the parts i need) is an online olds alero manual? anyone know where i can get a how-to to brake replacement on the net ... without having to buy a subscription or order anything? Thanks guys for the help btw... |

Your best bet is to go to a library and get a book on the particular car. Take it home and read on it. I don't know on any websites. There probably are some out there. If you need any help, we will help you. You will have to replace the rotors as well as the pads in this case.
Keep us posted.
